Starter Question

I ordered a new starter for the 350 SBC in my '70 C-10 and had a quick question. Based on a search of the forum, I went with a mini-starter for a 2003 Silverado 3500. (This engine has the SM465 transmisssion and 168-tooth flywheel.)

Anyway, when the new starter showed up it looks like it has 11-teeth on the bendix gear, while the old starter has 9-teeth. This doesn't seem right to me, but I'm hoping others have had some experience with this and can shed some light. Will this starter work for my set up? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!:mm:

Re: Starter Question

What flywheel is in your truck? I think you need to find one with 9 teeth on the bendix.

I've got the 168-tooth flywheel.

Any additional thoughts here?

Re: Starter Question

According to this, 9 and 11 tooth starters are interchangeable.

Yes both gear teeth count will work on a 168 tooth flywheel.

Re: Starter Question

The 11 tooth drive will have a smaller mechanical advantage than the 9 tooth drive, but it should work unless you are running huge static timing, like 13:1 or something.

What model should I look for to get the 9 tooth?
