Cold no start
I have a 1990 GMC Suburban R1500 350/auto. Now that its got cold{50 deg.} it wil not start. When it warms up outside it will start. It has new cap, rotor, plugs wires, ig. module and coil. Timing is right on. Any ideas? And a new fuelpump and sending unit.

Bad battery?

Re: Cold no start
No, battery is new.

Re: Cold no start
Possible fuel pump or the coolant temp sensor/wiring. The sensor is close to the t-stat and has yellow and black wires going to it

Re: Cold no start
Do you mean it cranks but not start? Or it doesn't even crank?

Re: Cold no start
New distributor?
|
Re: Cold no start
It rolls fine. Now there is no spark. Next to look at the distributor.

Re: Cold no start
When I first bought my truck, the guys said sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't. Truck was located in Seattle. I took a chance and drove it all the way back to Colorado without issue. Next morning, it wouldn't start. I changed a few things but never could pinpoint the real reason. So took it to a Chevy dealer and said keep it until the problem comes up again.
A few days later, cold starts in the morning, they discovered it needed a new distributor. They installed and I've never had a problem since. It has started reliably ever since and is my kid's daily driver now. |
Re: Cold no start
Thats what I am afraid it is going to need. But thanks for your help. Do you know what goes wrong with the distributor?

The magnetic pickup gets cracks and on cold, wet mornings those cracks get condensation. Water won't conduct the spark. No start. Plus after 100k they are wore out. Go Delco if you can. TBI hate anything but Delco parts. Look it over CLOSE first before you go for new. Do all trouble shooting you can do. Look at the coil first and work your way out from there. |
Re: Cold no start
So now is where I am at. I have replaced Dist. pickup coil, module, coil, plugs and wires. cap and rotor. It has new fuel pump and assembly. Now it starts and runs, you can be driving and it just stops. so I put dry gas in it, thinking I hap water from setting all winter, it still stalls, but it starts right back up. Any ideas?
