k10 hub temperatures

I recently replaced all the front wheel bearings and races in my 81 k10, bearings are properly greased, followed the proper torque procedure's, warn hubs are installed correctly etc. Today when I got home from work, I checked the hub temperatures and the driver side was fine. The passenger side however I can only touch for about 3 seconds before I had to pull my hand away it was quite a bit warmer than the driver side. I jacked both sides up and they both spin freely and smoothly with no binds and they feel great and have no play in them. I pulled the passenger locking hub off and took a look and it looked fine. Am I OK? Or should I investigate further?

Also, when I checked the hubs I just got done driving the freeway for about 50 miles and the ambient temperature was 70 degrees. Does anyone have a idea on how hot the hubs should be? Is there a specification?

Re: k10 hub temperatures

could it be the brakes causing the high hub temps?

The calipers are fairly new, the wheels spin freely. Also, I felt the wheel by the rotor and it wasn't too bad. It's definitely hot on the hub.

If you can’t feel a bind, then I would keep an eye on it for the next few days. I know the wheel felt okay, but the mass of the hub and rotor make for a good sized heat sink. How hard were you on the brakes? Especially coming off the freeway.

I would back off the torque just a little bit. Drive again and see if that made a difference. I recent had a 3,300 mile trip to Yuma and back with a 69 Chevy K10. One of the many prep items was to clean, pack brgs and new seals. Did the torque "correctly ". After drive about 200 miles, we checkef the hub temps, just like you. Found one hub significantly hot than the other 3. Back of the castle nuts one notch, rechecked in 50 miles. No difference in temp. I thought i had them all the same, but the temp was telling different. The rest of the trip went without any other mechanical difficulty.

Hard to tell if the hubs are hot when the ambient temperature is 115! It's a Yuma thing. Lol
