You bet Ken, two tones were definitely offered, and they're some of my favorites. The tangier orange paint codes are 516 (solid), 546 (conventional two tone, i.e. white top), 594 (deluxe two tone, i.e. white top and middle).
Ho, if your SPID paint code is 516, then it was originally solid tangier orange - the white top and middle have been added in a repaint most likely - which was commonly done on these as the two tones were quite popular. 1st (516) is Joe's former K20 (and a favorite of mine :)) 2nd (546) is another member's that I believe has been recently repainted(?) 3rd (594) is one I saw at a show once and got in trouble for drooling on.. CORRECTION - 483 is the correct code for this (thanks for the good catch Dwyert4 and P7M89MM) |
Re: 516 orange question for experts
I bought a 72 Cheyenne brand new that was tangier orange and white, in the deluxe paint scheme.
Thanks to Jocko, I now know the paint code 45 years later. |

Re: 516 orange question for experts
What code is 593? My truck was poorly repainted black and I can see in some spots what I thought was Orange?

Re: 516 orange question for experts
Excellent catch - and thank you for pointing that out - I grabbed the suburban code for a special two tone rather than the truck code for deluxe two tone by accident. Shoulda known, all truck deluxe two tone codes start with 4.... I put an edit above so nobody would grab the wrong codes by accident.
516 - solid tangier orange 546 - conventional two tone tangier orange and white 483 - deluxe two tone tangier orange and white |

Re: 516 orange question for experts
Me too, mine is the 483 code, but I use the 516 code to match the orange, so I always thought it was 516. A lot of knowledgeable people on this board. :)

Re: 516 orange question for experts
Jocko, Do you (or anyone else reading this) have any documentation(Data Book, SPID, Build Sheet) that shows 516 was available or used on a 1970 Chevrolet truck? I can't find any GM resource that says that 516 was available for Chevy trucks in 1970. 1970 was the year that 524 was introduced. I'm wondering if GM gave 516 the year off in order to promote 524. 516 is back for 1971 and 1972 but seems to be AWOL in 1970.
Ditzler shows it in 1970, but that doesn't mean it Actually was available. Ditzler often has errors in their books. Looking for a GM resource that has 516, 546 or 594 in 1970 for Chevrolet Light Duty pickups. |
Re: 516 orange question for experts
That's a good question since the 70 sales brochure doesn't have a color chip page. I have non-GM paint charts that show it as a medium duty color only, but I've also got some that aren't that specific either, so not really sure. I don't have a 70 data book and the Heritage VIKs don't list color choices. I'm gonna have to fish for a bit on this one!! Great question. Anyone got a 70 data book?? That would be ground truth, I don't trust the paint chip charts.

Re: 516 orange question for experts
Just a note on the many names by which this 516 color has gone:
Prior to 67-72 it was called Omaha Orange. 67-68, just plain Orange. 71-72 Tangier Orange. I've also heard it called "Sunbolt Orange'' -- go figure. Same can of paint, same #516, but the Boys in Marketing can't stop jazzing up the ad copy. |
