EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
Hey guys, I know the single tank 70s trucks are passenger side tank and the single tank 80s trucks were driver's side. My question is, if I'm trying to convert my 74 over to an EFI/TBI 87 tank, do I want to use a RH or LH tank, or does it not matter?
I would assume 70s guys would use the RH tank from an 87, and the 80s trucks would use the LH tank. I'm trying to order my tank, but I'd like to get some input from you all. Btw - my truck is a dual tank so I could go either side (I don't plan on messing with a dual tank transfer system when I go EFI). I'm asking because I also need to get a sending unit/ hanger from a TBI truck, but apparently they're different for the driver vs the passenger tanks! |
Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
You can use either. The only difference in the sending units for TBI is the outlet nipples are longer on the drivers side, so require less rubber line. You can make either one work though.

Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
If you are looking for my answer I would say drivers side . I dont like walking around to the other side of the truck to gas up . But as Wwes said , either will work .

Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
My 85 has dual tanks. I'm in the process of installing efi as I write this. I am installing the Edelbrock remote sump in the d/s inner fender area. I love that it's such an easy solution and all my stock fuel system remains unmolested.

Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
I converted to dual tanks and I am going to do Holley sniper efi. I swapped tanks for the 87 year ones and used walbro 255 lph pumps inside each tank. I upgraded my rubber lines to 100 psi rated line and clamped with oeticker ear clamps.

Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
When I went EFI on my 74 I kept both dual tanks. Used 87 EFI tanks and senders with fuel injected rated rubber line and a EFI switch valve. If I only did one tank I would have kept the passenger side to even put the weight in my truck since I usually ride alone. Both no reason not to do dual tanks except to save money.

Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
Dual tanks is not difficult, just use 87 tanks ,sending units, dash switch and valve i put msd atomic in my 86 and kept my dual tanks using this set up

Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
The switch i was talking about is the 87 dash mounted fuel tank selector switch, looks identicle to earlier years but is wired differently for 87 so that the power to the fuel pump and sending unit is routed through this switch
MSD atomic efi throttle body works awsome |

Re: EFI Conversion Fuel Tanks... LH or RH?
I had to get rid of the passenger side tank in my 74' because it had a leak.
I only have the drivers side tank and I like it. Makes it convenient to fill up. -Gavin |

2 Attachment(s)
I have attached 1987 wiring diagram and 86 and earlier diagram, the 86 has 4 wires to the switck, power, ground ,left and right valve i unplugged the power comming in and replaced that with power from the msd atomic going to the pump(s) then spliced the power to the pump into the light and dark green wires repectivly, for left and right pumps and used the switch from the 87, the punk wire goes to the gauge and the pink and black, and pink and white go to the sending units respectively, the 87 senders have a purple wire for senders and a grey wire for pumps
