Grease fitting problem
I've been in the process of installing new suspension parts and now working on screwing in the grease fittings on the bushings/ball joints. I have 2 that I can't get going.
One of them is going in at an angle and won't bite, the other doesn't appear to be grabbing any threads, so it isn't biting either. Any suggestions to get this squared away? Thanks. |
Re: Grease fitting problem
I dealt with this last year. Look closely, some of those parts have holes that are not threaded. If you can't just force the zerk in, use a tap to start the threads.

Re: Grease fitting problem
Not all zerks are threaded in some are drive/press in. Look closely at the hole if it isn't threaded then it will require a drive in zerk. I personally would not try to run a tap down unless I was able to disassemble the component to clean it out afterwards. I'm just not that lucky. There would be just one piece of metal left inside.

Re: Grease fitting problem
^ yep, grease fitting tap holes can be rough or get damaged during manufacturing, handling, shipping, etc.
common size tools are available as well as kits like these.. kits are handy to have various angled fittings on hand for pointing fittings to serviceable locations out of harm's way.. Grease Fitting and Install Kit,SAE https://m.grainger.com/rp/s/is/image..._AS02?$smmain$ 1/8 and 1/4 grease fitting taps and even the handy little t-handle 4-way tools similar to schrader style are also available separately.. we get our supplies from kimball midwest which is similar to lawson and othe nut n bolt vendors.. grainger, mcmaster-carr, etc. are also great vendor resources.. pro tip; flush lube passages with solvent to clear and metal shavings and debris before intalling grease fittings and applying lube ;) good luck! |
