Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
Curious what members have used for door mirrors on their AD?

Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
I used a set of FATTIES 4-inch round mirrors with curved arms from Hagan Street Rods:
http://www.haganauto.com/category_s/197.htm They have worked really well. Although I think the brand name is kinda dumb, the mirror surface is slightly convex which gives you a nice wide field of view, which I really need because my cab is only 3-window. Also, I think they have a sharp appearance and fit the natural look of the truck. They obviously aren't the stock mirrors but I don't think they jump out at you as obviously aftermarket either. Build-quality was top-shelf. https://i.imgur.com/QUv9wnG.jpg https://i.imgur.com/HSgboRH.jpg |

I've got some swan neck mirrors somewhat similar to what Torchlight has for my 48.
One photo should be the mirrors that still have the blue coating on them and the other is the part number. Ebay Item but I don't remember the seller. Putting the part number in a google search brings up several vendors that sell them for around 40 for the pair. |
Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
I do like the last ones posted. How do they work on the passenger side?

Mine's often a working truck so I went with function over style. Used original steel mirror arms (passenger side required heating and tweaking) with Orielly rectangular mirrors. Work great.

Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
How well can you see out the passenger size with that set up?
|
Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
Well, compared to the 4" (or so) factory round mirrors I started with, the rectangular ones are great. They're not a good as the factory electric units on the wifes 2015 Ram 2500, but very usable.
If you have the required steel factory mirror arms, you could try just one on the passengers side for less than $15.00. Or you could get a good idea by having someone hold it in the mounted position. |
Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
I have an original drivers side arm somewhere and will see how it works.

I ran 73/?? Chevy truck sport mirrors on my 48 for years They aren't that bad to see out with on the right hand side.

Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
looks good on that one. The 54 vent windows and the curvature of the beltline seem to be in way of most aftermarket mirrors. Anyone got a pic of the inside of a 53/54 door (without the panel) to refresh my memory of how access is?

Home made stuff. 5" round convex with arms made from re-bar and some flat stock. Long arms as I have a camper which is wide.

Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
Well i'm back square one on my mirror search. I managed to borrow a set and they are too small to see thru and would require a contortionist to install (or some inside access holes. Just as well, the ones i ordered never arrived. Hopefully they are insured. Now thinking the original arms with square 5x7 mirrors may be the way to go. I have a a painted LH one so just need a RH one and the mirrors. IS there a template out there for drilling the mounting holes? I felt underneath the cowl edges on both side and did not feel any holes or welded on nuts. Were they supposed to be there? Chrome arms would look better than black but $$$.

"Seems like original Passenger side mirror arms are not easy to find. Repops are cheap and some are being offered with the 5x7 square mirrors. Do you think a repop would WORK on a standard 54 without having to be bent?"
If sold with rectangular mirrors one would expect them to work. I'd make sure they were returnable just in case though. I only have experience with the stainless coated potmetal arms I purchased from Chevys of the 40's, also most vendors list the arms as being the same for all series 1 trucks, 1947 thru 1954 (some show thru 55?). So, that said mine were sold with a round stainless mirror and didn't have sufficient adjustment range with the rectangular mirrors. It broke when I tried to bend as required to get enough range of adjustment. The original steel arm was easy to heat and reshape. The reshape requires heating the last bend, straighten the arm and then heat and move the bend intoward the mounting point, this makes the section the mirror attaches to longer, allowing you to adjust it as needed without it contacting the mount arm. Guess the simple thing to say is the bend closest to the mirror has to be changed. Also, attaching the mirror to the mount arm with acorn nuts would be better, it's on my list. |
Re: Which Door mirrors did you choose for your AD?
Careful heating whitemetal. It's mostly zinc and melts under 800 degrees f.
