AD panel doors?

A friend has a Deco era panel, claims the doors are not the exact same as pickup doors— his neighbor has a pickup same era to compare.

Interesting factoid that I tucked away.. Until today when I made a deal to buy a couple panel trucks. Anyone know for certain if the doors on a 47-49 panel are identical to those for a pickup?
Thanks guys- Greg

I am curious on this one. I always thought they were the same, can't wait until someone who really knows posts. :D

The 1929-54 Chevy Master Parts Catalog shows AD trucks and Panels use the same doors COE's are unique to themselves.. Doors are Group 16.150

What year door do you need? I have some 51 doors. Also have a few 47/50 doors. Most are the bare shell though as every door I seem to get my hands on was stripped before I got it.

If things don't work out on your deal we can figure something out.

What is different, all ADs have a right door lock and none on the left correct?

I'm thinking the tops of the Deco era aka 41-first series 47 panel and burb doors may be slightly different. It's hard to tell in these off the net photos.
Not so on the late 47 though 54 doors. Someone with a panel or burb would have to speak up on the left door lock or not thing. I am thinking not.

52-53 doors are the same. The lower hinge cover is held on with 1/4 by 20 screws . 54-55 first series doors are the same . The lower hinge cover is held on with sheetmetal screws . Not sure why they decided to make such a small switch.

47-50 Doors are the same . 51 is kind of a oddball (turndown door handle with vent window) One year only. You can bolt a 51 door onto a 47-50 truck if you want a vent window in your door.

The tops of the panel trucks are different . They have an extra upper body line which matches a line in the body of the panel truck . In the photo shown it is where the color change is near the top of the door. Otherwise same as the pickup.

Follow the link I posted

obviously something is different in the 54 passenger side doors or the chevy parts manual would not have listed it separately with its own part #

Re: AD panel doors?

67GMCkid - I thought it was like a trivia thing. "lock" was my guess but it's been 30 years since a 54 was parked in my driveway "brother's high school ride".

mr48- Thanks, I think there's enough doors included but am not sure if they were pickup, panel or doesn't matter. Still unclear actually because I can see on the Deco panel pictured there's a body line just above the door handle that the pickup doesn't have. Now that I see what may be different I'll look at some AD panel pics.

edit--- Looks the same from behind the computer screen. I'll see in person tomorrow.

Re: AD panel doors?

Offer stands if you need a 47/51 door. I am going to cut 4 of my doors down the middle to make doors 9-1/4 inches longer and use the front part of 47/50 doors and the back part of a couple of 51 doors so as long as half of a door is good I can trade.

May just take you up on it so I can put a face to your handle and score a tour of your projects. Greg

First one home. This is a ‘47 Deluxe, doors sure look the same as pickups, but they’re in decent shape anyway. Pretty rough passenger rear fender but the other truck’s fender is decent.

Re: AD panel doors?

Where did you drag that in from?

I just didn't want you to have to hunt down doors or pay an exorbitant price for one when I have a stash.

Outside Benton City, heading back in the morning to pick up it’s sister.
Thanks again for the offer mr48

Re: AD panel doors?

Good find, there still seems to be a lot of stuff down in that area. Or it is finally coming up for sale.

I have seemed to accumulate a number of doors over the years, most stripped but good shells and after I get my truck up and going I plan to start cutting down the accumulation of parts to a manageable level.

Re: AD panel doors?

I was telling my Uncle today that Benton seemed like good rust hunting these days.
Really lucked out with this find. My pickup is full of parts he threw in plus the other truck. Should be enough to cherry pick for this one and move the other on to someone else with decent parts to work with.

Here’s the parts truck and a stack of spares too. Gonna be fun to sort this stuff - the back of the trucks are full of goodies too

Re: AD panel doors?

That parts truck looks better than some guys project trucks.

fourspeedwagon 12-20-2017 01:25 AM

Re: AD panel doors?

Not bad huh? Hopefully by spring I’ll have everything sorted and can make the “parts truck” someone else’s “project truck”. Couldn’t believe there was even an extra set of rear doors. Lots of bumpers, running boards, heaters and a couple radios. Need to study those to see if they’re original type but at first glance appear to be. Still searching for exactly what is included in the Deluxe version but I am seeing window trim, fender trim and the steering wheel in the deluxe truck is pretty skookum.
