Question: Inside door panels.

Been looking at upgrading my door panels. The parts suppliers sell door panel kits pre-assembled with new panel backing or unassembled w/o the backing. The price for the assembled panels is much higher. What are the panels made of? Are they easy to custom build?

Ideas?
