Garage floor coatings
 

Has anyone used any specialty garage floor coatings? Specifically, Gorilla Garage or any other Polyaspartic floor covering companies.

Ya done it now Stan. Now I gotta go find this "alleged floor" that you're saying we all have. Sheesh, what's next? The Earth is gonna be round?;)

69Canam - JK. In all seriousness, Ive worked on many commercial garages / shops in the area. For a long time, there was only one company that would shoot an epoxy floor. It was called StoneHard. Nice durable commercial finish. I do remember that it was imperative that the concrete was absolutely clean and did not wick any moisture up from below (which meant a base rock or sand base under the pour). The prep was the biggest thing with these guys. The jobs would nearly shut down for a week while they prepped - shot and the fumes would near kill you for up to a week later as it cured. Nice stuff though.

Ive seen a lot of different coatings in the home improvement stores as of late and although Ive never tried them in my garage (BC until now I didn't know I had a floor :lol:), I have several friends that have used different ones from the big box stores with success. I have used a garage floor paint in my enclosed dirt bike trailer which takes the abuse of tools being dropped, oil and fuel sitting on it for long periods and my Son's hole shots out of the trailer on his 80. Even though its a wood floor, the stuff is bulletproof after 5 years so far. It sticks pretty good too. When I first rolled it on, I wanted a non slip finish so I rolled it on with a heavy nap roller. I got distracted and left the roller handle laying in the thick fresh paint. It dried and I ended up ripping off a layer of plywood when I pulled the handle off a few hours later. The stuff I got was made by Behr and I'd probably give it a try if I ever got the garage cleared out.

Not sure if that's what your looking for as far as a recommendation. Hope it helps. If not, cover your floor with parts like the rest of us!

nearly all our plant floors have stonehard on them...very expensive.....I wanted to coat my alleged shop floor with the garage paint but the way things go in my shop Im afraid it wouldn't hold up to good...torch work and welding and dragging stuff around don't go to good with that...

6"+ of concrete. It's pretty much impervious to anything, including the pressure from the steel wheels of a floor jack when raising that giant steel pig of a truck off its surface.

I have an epoxy floor in my 25x35 shop. It's pretty durable. Put in by a local guy. I also had them extend it up and do a "molded baseboard".

IMO, you get what you pay for.

My neighbor Herb is 87 years old did his garage floor by his self with Epoxy and scattered flakes over it like feeding the chickens,, looks not bad and it sure is good for cleanning ,, to take it up the wall a bit is even better like trucker has done ,,then no problem hosing it out the door .

I use road salt, grease, trans fluid, engine oil and blood

How do you guys handle the coated floors being slippery. I had a garage that was coated with something. I bought it that way so I don't know what it was. But you could play hockey on it.

I would try to put my car on my ramps to change the oil and the ramps would just slide around.

I thought about trying the Rustoleum garage floor kit when I saw it, but the reviews are really mixed. I've decided to go simple and use a premium outdoor latex paint.

Mine is only slippery when it's when. I where non slip shoes to work and they are pretty effective.

I've had ramps slide around on dry pavement and concrete. The only place I could ever get them to not move around was in the grass. Then they would sink.

I did the DIY Rustoleum kit in my garage and it has started to peel after 6 years from efflorescence pushing up to the surface in the concrete.

The other thing I wanted to note...those flakes of paint that are included in the kit to scatter on the floor make for perfect camouflage for dropped nuts and bolts. I've spent a lot of time looking for that 1/4" washer that dropped when I was putting something together.

The biggest challenge with painting a concrete floor is the prep. If you don't get that part right, any coating will come off.
