Plastic fuel tank cover removal

I was trying to remove the plastic fuel tank cover/guard thing on my 87 R10. I removed the bolt and four nuts that I could see and the thing wouldn’t budge. Is there something I’m missing here? I was trying to get them off without having to drop the tanks. Has anyone done this before?

4 nuts is what I remember. You will have to man handle it because if I remember correctly, I think it gets stuck on a lip of the tank or make sure you have the cover over the side bolts..

Good info Pontgta. I have the opposite problem as the OP. I was driving home and my plastic cover fell off and was dragging down the road so I need to put it back on correctly. After I replace the rusted out tank mount brackets and straps though.

I wouldn't put it back on after you replace everything, I would just Por 15 coat the whole thing. That cover is why it rusted everything out, it allows water and dirt to build up in it and it just sits there. I done both of mine 3 years ago and never put them back on, I take it to a bottom blast carwash and it still looks new.
