What to do with stale gas?
I bought a truck that's got half a tank of gas from the mid 90s, last time it was on the road.
I can't pour it down the drain, obviously, and I live in a watershed, so it's not going in the ground, and it's too old to burn in a car. What the heck can a guy do with like 10 gallons? I could fill 5 gallon paint buckets and take it to the "hazardous waste" collection events they have now and then but that's my only guess! |
Re: What to do with stale gas?
Wait till a hot day and pour it on concrete so it will evaporate, do it a little at a time.

Re: What to do with stale gas?
Old gas like that I use to start my wet burn piles after I mix it with some old crank case oil and diesel

Re: What to do with stale gas?
davepl,
In my area we have a household hazardous waste collection site that is open Thur, Fri, Sat, and they take it for free. I would hold on to it until you have one in your area. |
Re: What to do with stale gas?
Find someone who uses/plays with antique tractors.

What Troy says! We have the same thing in our area.

Hey davepl,
Here's a link to a hazardous household waste in your area at Home depot next weekend April 6th!! It says they take gasoline! http://www.redmond.gov/cms/One.aspx?...9&pageId=16013 |

Put it in an old container on the side of your house for ever.

I put it in a spray bottle and use it for weed killer on my gravel driveway. It works better than anything off the shelf.... LockDoc |

Re: What to do with stale gas?
I had the same problem. After a week of driving around with the jerry can in the back of my truck, I was lucky enough to have someone finally steal it.
I was disappointed that it happened in the parking lot of a junk yard I go to, seems like there should be some sort of car guy code against that. Pretty sure the guy stalled on the side of the road a couple miles away was him, though. |
Re: What to do with stale gas?
Its great for Fire Ant hills .

Re: What to do with stale gas?
I mix it 50/50 with super and run it in my lawn mower.

Re: What to do with stale gas?

Re: What to do with stale gas?
not much help for the OP, but for the OC folks watching;
Household Hazardous Waste good idea for city dwellers that don't have a lot of other options.. the place in the OC will also take it in any suitable sealed container like paint buckets etc. so you don't have to give up your gas cans.. I was raised on a farm in the midwest, old gas had a 101 uses but 'round these city folk, gotta be careful.. good luck! |
Re: What to do with stale gas?
I took almost 30 gallons (took two trips) to the household hazmat roundup where I live. You aren't supposed to haul more than 16 gallons without a license, here. Both saddle tanks on my truck had been disconnected for years. I drained them into Jerry cans and then dropped them to get the remainder. What doesn't evaporate out of bad gasoline and gets used for other purposes ends up fouling water at some later time.

Re: What to do with stale gas?
Don't put gas in your good bug sprayer! I ruined mine doing this. The gas destroyed the valves in the pump!Diesel fuel is o.k.
I use old gas in my lawn equipment/golf cart, usually 50/50 or higher depending on how old the gas is. Or,I use it to clean parts, then it goes to the burn pile. Mike.:chevy: |
Re: What to do with stale gas?
I would think a little at a time mixed with tank full of new gas would be ok...

Re: What to do with stale gas?
I had this same problem, back in 2013. Sucking out 20 gallons of 2006-dated gasoline was the first thing I did to my truck.
No hazardous waste collection around here, although a place I called said I could pay them several hundred dollars to dispose of it for me(!). I ended up running an ad in the local trading paper and GAVE IT AWAY, new gas jugs and all. Fella came and got it, I made sure he understood it was old and meat for burning brush. Bad thing was, he got the gas jugs with it, so I gave him a few bucks in the deal. |
Re: What to do with stale gas?
It is a problem. I wonder what these places do with it that accept it. If it's from the '90s it will probably be as good as 6 month old ethanol. I have mixed it in, a little at a time, to full tanks in my vehicles. Or, I do a splash onto the gravel, light it, and keep splashing cautiously until I burn it all. It's chose your pollution in this case. But I care mostly about the water with it and figure all the vehicles out there are already burning it.

Re: What to do with stale gas?
it'd make for a nice hot fire in a waste oil furnace. Any shops that use them?
