Title says it all, its rusty, beat up, full of packrats but its a short bed! 292 Fired right up after 20+ years of sitting. Drove it around, brakes barley work, rear end is loose and there's a giant hole in the floor by the gas pedal, but what fun to drive!

The 292 is not better then the 250.Building any HP the 292 crank is not a High Perf crank I've seen then snap the 250 motor was a better design.Plus i was told the cam bearing if you got it up to High RPM's they spin taking out the cam.Never seen a any one use the tri power on the 292

But plenty of them used it on the 250 Plus the 292 was just a truck motor

That thing is worked.Back in 2006-09 saw so many of these truck scraped cus of the 400.00 a ton for scrap Plenty of of trucks that would make this whole site cry

But who cares about speed in a truck like this? A great farm truck motor for sure. You need to run this truck to a show and win some trophies. Or at least get all the attention.

What a find, being a short bed, especially with the 292.

The 292 is a great engine. It's smooth running, plenty of torque, and easy to work on with room to spare to swing a wrench. The ironic thing here is, other than cleaning it, the only thing I've had to do is change the oil and filter a few times. I added the external components, but the basic engine has never been opened since it was new in '68. I have an electronic distributor that I've told myself I'll install when the points system gives out, but even that hasn't happened.
I really prefer the reliability. I can exceed any speed limit posted around here!:metal:


BTW Tim, I just visited the link you posted. Now how am I supposed to get back the time I spent watching the rest of those clips?? :)

A central Oklahoma drag racer has a super stocker that ran 292's. It had 3 4 barrel carbs on it. It was competitive in the 70's. He got his used engines from UPS. All the old timey "brown" trucks had 292's in them. He never blew one up.
I have a 292, but it's a .060 over 283, :)

Those UPS guys ran the whiz out of those 292s, just as they do with whatever they run now.

I'm sorry Slo Mo, the same happened to me when I first discovered that truck. That's a buzzin' half dozen in that thing. I love watching that li'l '36 get up and go! Or more like just GO and be GONE!!

blue 72, get that thing to stopping, and maybe a little more reliable (tires that hold air, LOL) take it to a car show JUST like it is, right now. That would be interesting...

Agreed! Nothing more than than road-worthy and safe, but left as is. Anybody can fix-up, restore, or refurbish with a few parts, but genuine Mother Earth Patina takes time. They are only original once........

You are spot on! I really don't want to do anything to it other than keep the doors from falling off.

I thought so when I first saw it. I think its all built from scrap angle iron from around the ranch. I'll have to get some more close up pics.

Some more pictures. I really want to take it to a car show now. :lol: It could really use a tune up an some tires that hold air! All of the emblems have been broken off. I think my buddy and his friends did that as kids, because this truck was their "go cart".

So your buddy and his brother gave it the stress test, ey? Couldn't hurt it! Whatever you do, do not was and polsh that rear wheel or you'll end up with SHINY CHROME!! I say get that thing purring like a kitten, running so smooth you can hardly tell it's running, then take it as is to a show. Got a pet pot belly pig? Arnold :lol:? Bring him along or maybe borrow one. This is a must!
