Help identifying engine
 

I’ve tried looking for the engine stamp on my engine but can’t seem to find it. The truck is new to us and I’m trying to find out what engine is in the truck. The truck is a 1970 C20 Longhorn with V8 400 badges on it. I need to get a new carb and do a tune up on it but am stuck in the water as far as what parts to get. Reading thru the forums You guys are some very knowledgeable guys so I’m hoping someone can help me figure this out.

Look behind the fuel line and A/C compressor bracket. Your engine looks like it was born in that truck

The valve covers identify it as a big block. Most likely a 402.

That is a sweet big block 402 - high option truck with cruise and A/C.

Sorry for the newbie question but actually behind the ac bracket as in remove it to see the stamp? I shined my flashlight all around that area and couldn’t see any numbers. Any other indicators that would tell me that it’s a 402 vs a 396?

The stamping on the block is on the flat portion where the head attaches, almost directly under the upper hose clamp on the fuel line in the picture you posted. Use a flashlight and clean the area with scotchbrite, wire brush or a rag with degreaser.

I was looking up the rebuild kit for my carb Quadra jet 7040206 and on the Quadrajet site it says that that carb was put on the GM 396, is that carb also on the 402 stock? Still no luck with the stamp

They're basically the same engine. The 402 has a slightly larger bore.

Are you looking here? Illustrated in the upper right hand corner ENGINE ID/V.I.N. CODE. Sometimes it's hard to see 'cause it's greasy/nasty.

Is the Service Parts ID (SPID) sticker still on the glove box door? If so, it will list the options that the truck was equipped with. It does appear to be a lot like my truck, which was factory equipped with a BBC 400 (402). But I don't have cruise control.

Go here or call Cliff and give him the part number off the carburetor.

Buy Cliff's book, and parts. His parts are ethanol resistant, and better quality than anything you can buy.
Buy his deluxe kit (the more expensive one) it is worth it, has parts no one else puts in a kit, or even sells. When you order, he can send you all parts needed to set up your carb, exactly for it's application.
He has a kit to re-bush the primary throttle shafts, you will need that also.

Unfortunately it doesn’t have the SPID in the glove box. Thanks for the suggestion on the cliffs products. Are you referring to the SR or the HP kit?

it's the HP kit, the more expensive one, it's worth every penny.
When you call, you will talk to Ray. He will need your carb number, and a somewhat detailed idea of the vehicle. Gear ratio, trans type, etc...
Cliff can send everything needed to calibrate the carb, the first time. You will also need the marine tex epoxy kit to seal the well plugs in the main body.

If you have questions after starting the build, email Cliff. He stays so busy, he can't afford to be on the phone.

if it's the original engine it is the 402....
