anyone who's got a Square Body can attest to their temperamental fueling up issues, and I've dropped the tank and went through every inch of the piping to ensure nothing is obstructing justice here, lol its just the nature of the beast... but every once in a while when the sun is just at the right position in the sky and the cute cashier gives you that smile and doesn't call you Sir, (caue hewk you aint that old)... it can happen - you can fill up your tank without spilling a drop, whaa haa ha

Note: I use the Gangsta Technique when filling up by holding the nozzle flat parallel to the ground, like bad guys do with their glocks, jk

must not be all the way full then!
on my diesel, I have to start pumping at a slow trickle, until I get most of a gallon in it, then I can start pumping full speed and don't have any issues. but I can't just throttle it out of the gate or it pukes everywhere.

I've never once had an issue. My 86swb has been my daily since 2008 and the last 100k miles. Is your charcoal canister plugged? Take the lines off of it and try it

I have had 3 squares: 73,76, 83 and all had the same problem. The gangsta method works for me also.

The problem started when the EPA compliant gas pump nozzles had that wire wrapped around the outside of the nozzle and the length of the nozzle was shortened. Occasionally, I find an old style longer nozzle without the wire and those fill fine without any sideways tricks.

I did some research on this and I see you have those stupid California nozzles. I read that not inserting the nozzle all the way in can help. Another thing you can do is install a filler neck from a diesel, apparently the larger diameter filler helps this

The vent either works or it doesn't. I have one truck that takes the gas very slow. Luckily my daily driver can drink it as fast as I put it in.

I hold just inside the lip of the filler and it goes in fine

We still have the older style fill nozzles here in OK. Have found that any nose down slope you can get helps.

thanks for the tip, the charcoal canister has been deleted three years ago and when I did it I realized that the charcoal canister does not have a bottom so by design it is opened, so I don't get how it would clog / effect the fillup anyway

this is what it normally looks like, on a good day, ha ha, I ain't complainin' I'm just sharing if any others are scratching their heads on this one, especially my fellow Californians (the least car friendly state in the Union)

IIm not sure on squares but numerous new cars can have a clogged canister causing overflows or clicking off.

Maybe it's only on the older trucks. I've owned a 84,85,86, and 82 and never had a spilage issue mostly just the pump shutting off. On the military trucks the opening is like 3 inches so you have to hold the nozzle the whole time or it will fall out

The 73-77 straight out fill neck is not friendly. 78-91 with the doors and a little more height is easier but they still occasionally barf fuel out.

I see we are talking about the new fangled gas pumps with the goofy rubber boot around it. I am fortunate not to have to deal with those any more. They used to have them in NH but I haven't seen them for a while. Maine never fell for that craze.

According to today's news, you might have 3 California states in November! Can't imagine that the philosophy of " if 1 is good then ...is better" applies in this case?

this article has some good diagrams in it. adding this to show there is a filter in the bottom of the charcoal canister that may be clogged and needing replacement. just google "charcoal canister filter" for a new one. think they were the same across the GM lines.
otherwise the article, although informative, gets a little b!#@hy.
