excessive engine angle

What’s everyone doing about the engine/trans angle? I have an lq4 and 4l80e.
I am using the stock trans crossmember. I have the 73+ c20 engine stands and my angle was about 6.5 degrees when the frame is set level. I had about 1.25” between the oil pan and crossmember. I remembered a discussion about the 73+ c10 mounts so I got those and installed them. I also put 1/2” spacers at the trans mount. I’m at 4.5 degrees. Now the Oil pan is about 1/8” from the crossmember.. Is 4.5 to 5 degrees going to be ok? My truck is a 2 piece drive shaft if that changes anything. |

I don't see an issue with it. As long as you can get your rear end the appropriate corresponding angle, the driveline will be happy.

I think mine is around 5 degrees.

I just pulled my stock motor and trans this past weekend and the trans yoke was at 5 degrees. Planning to put the 4L80 and the same.

yeah ..not terrible.. like brew said, as long as your rear diff angle matches your engine/trans angle it be all good...just imagine them running as 2 imaginary parallel lines...I always like posting this vid whenever a driveline angle question comes up....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idk3BVDVHq4

Thanks for the feedback. Makes me feel better. I will get the engine at the least angle possible and adjust the carrier bearing and rear diff as necessary.

As long as the rear end is the mirror image angle, should be OK as long as lubrication isn't compromised by the angle, and I can't imagine 5 degrees would cause a problem.

I dont think you could get and ls engine in a vehicle at such and extreme angle and make it fit into the vehicle to be a problem . Just make sure its proper to your drive shaft . This is more important to the drive train .

The problem is that for every u joint you need a second u joint with the OPPOSITE angle to "cancel" out the leverage of one. When one is at max leverage the other is opposite. But with a two-piece driveshaft you just have that one in them middle, and I don't know how to deal with geometry on that one. I'll sit back and learn I guess! |

i just stabed mine in and didnt set any angles i have a 2 pieces shaft no wierd vibarations or anything yet 2k miles in

On a 2pc shaft, you need to veiw the first shaft as an extension of the trans (pretty much), but give that 1st u joint off the trans about 1 degree, to work the grease into the joint. The last 2 joints should pretty much match up.....is it leaf or coil spring? On a leaf spring truck, you may want to have the pinion @ a slightly tipped down angle, as it will rock up on the throttle. dont ask, how I learned this! I have a neighbor, with a 67 camaro BB/4 spd, he runs "broke back" angles, a 1 pc shaft....in other words, the trans is 3 degrees down to the rear, & the pinion is 3 degrees down to the front. It cruises fine like that, & under a hard wrap on the springs, it handles the 1/4 mile just fine! Fruit for thought? Longhorn
