New to me '05 Yukon XL SLT 4wd - shocks?
My new '05 Yukon XL is in great shape.... well maintained, etc.
It has 140,000 miles. What I am wondering about is the shocks. The Yukon steers & maneuvers very well. But I feels "heavy"... as expected. I just sold my '88 C2500 2wd truck, and it obviously is lighter feeling & had new Tokico shocks.. It looks like my '05 has original shocks. I am wondering what you guys have bought to firm - up the ride? Take some of the slower MPH sway out of the heavy truck when turning?? I still want the smooth ride..... but firmer. |

Do you know what suspension package you have? 2005 had a few different options, premium smoothride, autoride, Z71, etc. I had the premium smoothride which consisted of wimpy coil springs and giant Nivomat shocks. I didn't like the wallowy feeling, especially at freeway speeds. I bought some Moog Z71 springs and Bilstein shocks, vast improvement. The Z71 springs did lift the rear end a bit, but as I tow regularly I didn't mind the extra height. It is still smooth but much more stable.

Thanks... I won't get into changing springs...... yet.....
But I'll check out the Bilsteins . That website looks interesting.... I'll check it out tomorrow |
Re: New to me '05 Yukon XL SLT 4wd - shocks?
I checked my RPO codes. My suspension code is the ZW7.
"Premium Smooth Ride". Front shocks are conventional. The rear shock is a Nivomac "self-leveling". It is combined with a softer spring, since the shock controls the height. Which means, I need to get a firmer spring if I replace the shock, or the new shock will allow the rear to sag. ........ Crap..... ( I wonder if I replace just the front shocks, for now??) |

I am going to accept the "softer ride"......
What is important to me is on freeways, and making an evasive maneuver. ( I used to hang out with Bob Bondurant) I don't want wobble..... Maybe sway bars first? See what that is like, and go from there. |
