Help identifying, please!
Hello all,
I’m new to the forum and need a little help. I’ve been trying to buy a particular 1964 Chevy K10 for 10-15 years and finally have verbally purchased it over the phone. However, when I went to look at it, the VIN starts with “2C”. That should be sufficient enough to convince me that it isn’t a factory 4wd, but a couple of things don’t add up for me. 1) the truck has “knee-knickers”, which thought ended in 1963; 2) I’ve read that the VIN tag should be located on the driver’s side B pillar on a ‘64, but this one is located on the A-pillar, where it should be for a ‘60-63; 3) I know this one could easily be faked, but it has an original-looking 4wd operation sticker on the roof; 4) the body appears to fit the frame very well. If it is a conversion, it appears to have been well-done back in the day. My uncle owned the truck around 25 years ago and he was told it was an original 4wd when he bought it. Is there any additional ways to identity if it was originally a 4wd? I’m curious if the VIN tag was replaced. Also, the VIN on the from driver’s side frame rail is very hard to make out, but doesn’t appear to match the VIN in the door. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Help identifying, please!
Frame should also have a VIN.
See if they match. |

Here’s the VIN on the frame. Clearly doesn’t appear to match the VIN in the door, but I can’t make it out well. Is there a way to tell if this is a ‘60-66 4wd frame by the build? Also, would the VIN be in any other locations on the body? Under/behind the dash, etc?

Re: Help identifying, please!
The cab is an original '62 2wd cab. I don't think the VIN tag has been messed with since it appears to still be spot welded. The hood is also a '62 and is possible the rest is as well. That is except for the '64-'66 grill. It's hard to say what the frame is without seeing more of it or the VIN on the frame. If the title has the cab VIN, that would likely be what matters unless you need a vehicle inspection to transfer the title and register in your state or county. Often times the inspector doesn't look at the frame VIN.

Re: Help identifying, please!
If I remember right the cab supports from the frame that fit your cab are different from 64-66. Check the supports where they fasten to the frame & see if they are riveted or bolted.
Does that truck have a divorced transfer case? |
Re: Help identifying, please!
If I walked up to that truck I would tell you that I'm looking at a 1962 stepside with a 64 grill. That is obvious. As far as it being 4WD? Yo no say.

Re: Help identifying, please!
62 would be an x-frame.

Re: Help identifying, please!
The front bumper bolt spacing looks to be a 60-62.

No K10's were x frames. they were similar to a 1 ton.

Ah - the last two numbers on the frame - I see 45.
The last two on the VIN plate - 64. |

Well, I decided to bring it home regardless. Hopefully I didn’t make a bad buy at $1,900. One way or another, it’s gonna be a nice ride for me one day 😎

Re: Help identifying, please!
12 bolt rear with track bar eyelet intact. Think that has been changed as well.
Could you take pictures of the front diff to see if if it's open or closed. Steering dampner was never an option. Divorced transfer case? |
Re: Help identifying, please!
Hub Lok option on front?

Re: Help identifying, please!

14 indicates 115" wheelbase 4 indicates that it came with a box , step or fleetside therefore not cab & chassis A as above 1 all serial numbers of this era started with 1 20,764th truck produced at that plant. |
