Column shifter handle
Is there something special or unique about installing the handle on a column shifter ? Mine doesn't go in all the way for the holes to line up for the pin. Just wondering cuzz its been one of THOSE days. Broke the starter solenoid overtightening the nut for the battery + wire. Then while going to get a new one a tie rod end completely broke on my daily driver. Had to get towed home. So the shifter handle could've just been me at the end of my rope !

Re: Column shifter handle
Just replaced mine I bought from brothers for my 69. I had to knock the edges off the ball at the end for it to fit. I’m guessing the socket it goes in is worn which doesn’t allow it to sit properly or the after market casting is a tad off.

Re: Column shifter handle
I bought a new lever and had the same problem. I determined the hole in the shift tube that the ball fits into was out of shape so I drilled it just a hair and mine fit right in. Be aware there were 4 different shift levers for the 67-72 years. Here's a link from classic parts catalog.

Don't forget the anti-rattle bushing that fits on the end of the shift lever. It snugs everything up and makes it shift better..... They are usually missing when you remove the original lever. https://www.classicparts.com/1967-74...ctinfo/91-108/ LockDoc |
Re: Column shifter handle
Tks everyone, especially for the links. My anti-rattle bushing was absent so that's something i would've missed. I'm sure it must make a big difference, lotta play there.

Also, just before you put the shift lever back in squirt some penetrating oil into the opening where it goes in, to lubricate the shift lever tube. It will make the lever move a lot easier when you pull up on it to get it in and out of park. LockDoc |
Re: Column shifter handle
I should have specified. 3 spd on col. Does that handle still use the bushing ?

You know, I'm not sure. As many trucks as I've had I have never had a three speed manual. I would think it would still use one though. LockDoc |
Re: Column shifter handle
Yeah, parts book does'nt specify. Thanks

Re: Column shifter handle
Ok. Parts book lists same handle for 3 spd and auto trans, so yeah bushing should be the same. Tks again.
