Spare parts build

Picked this old thing up a lil while back and really liked it for some reason. It's old and ratty but has some character. Kind of a cool lil truck, it's the first 5.7 Diesel I've personally seen in the 81+ bodystyle. I really liked it because it was very well kept and unmolested. Previous owner had rebuilt the motor and AC system and after about 10k miles something happened with the fuel system and he didn't want to mess with it so it got parked and say for quite some time. I don't have any desire to play with the Olds Diesel but still thought it was kinda cool. I've had some extra stuff hanging around the shop and a 5.3/4L60 sitting that needed used so I decided to toss it all together for a lil run around truck. I'll update as we move along. I actually won't get too much hands on with this one but my lil brother will so hopefully I can get him to chime in and update as it moves along.

That’ll be fun. I got a little scared for you when I saw it was the (in)famous Olds 5.7 diesel. My grandparents usually drove Cadillacs that they bought when they were 2 years old. The bought a beautiful early 80s Eldorado- the original 5.7 oil burner blew up with less than 100 miles on it. Was being driven home from the dealer. The warranty engine lasted 8k miles. Grandpa bought it at that point and replaced it with an Olds gas burner and then it was great. Not sure what GM was thinking on that fiasco.
5.3 LS will be perfect. Have fun.

If you were closer I'd come get that Olds engine. I can make that truck get 35 MPG! It will leak more fuel than it burns!

BH - sorry for the hijack but—-

Andy- How? I know that sometimes things get a reputation undeservedly but you’re the first that I’ve heard that is a fan of that engine. I guess you didn’t say that you could make it reliable or durable, only that it would leak but I assume you wouldn’t play with them if it wouldn’t last a while.
It’s been years since I’ve seen one of them run. I do like diesels (drive one daily) but the high compression didn’t seem to agree with that block.

Get a quote from Fastenal it might be fairly cheap through them to ship. I don't need much out of the motor

Re: Spare parts build

The last one I had my hands on I installed it into a '72 Ford F100. The owner worked for the County State Aid & I didn't know it at the time but his plans were to "Dip" diesel outta the motor graders & run his truck on it! Was a turbo 400 w/ a 2.75 rear axle. He told me he got mid 30s MPG back & forth to work.
Hard to believe but I've never seen one of these blown! They had the same GM glow plug problem the 6.2s had until they came out w/ the solid state glow plug relay retrofit & the advance piston bore wore out just like the 6.2 DB2 pumps. Can't say I'm a "Fan" because I like the Mechanical 6.5s MUCH better & these engines lack that thing we like called "Power"
Someplace around here I have two brand new injection pumps for the Olds Diesel.
Always wanted to rig a turbo on one after stacking a pair of head gaskets & see how it would run.
Wonder if it would fit in my S10???;)
Oh yeah love the "Ball Bearings In The Blender" sound they make when idling cold!

He’s made some progress. Got the motor pulled, and cleaned and painted the frame.

They can be made reliable. Gutless but reliable. Kinda like the 40hp 1.5l VW diesel. In the 78-80 Rabbit.
ARP head studs and a real fuel filter/water-separator goes a long way.

Diesel is the only way you got hydroboost on the ½Ton trucks.

Re: Spare parts build

I sent my PCM of to get tuned and tuner wants to know gear ratio. The spid doesn't say anything about that as I was hoping it would. I'm assuming it's a 2.73 but does anyone know if that was or was not standard in these? I would pull the cover and check but I'm not there to do it.

I was under the impression that the G80 option could be ordered with various gear ratios but I could be wrong

Every C10 Diesel I ever owned had a 2.73 rear axle. Even the '82 w/ the 700R4 trans!

Any of these #'s on the diff does it still have a tag or stamping on the housing.
82 should be 10 bolt, has heavy load in rear. I'm guessing 350 Diesel was being set up for pulling. Did it have a bigger diff and that why it was not marked. If you can't find any # that will help then pop open the cover count teeth.

I'll ask my brother if he can crawl under and look. What other diffs did they have in C10's for 81?
