tach install trouble
2 Attachment(s)
Hey everyone,
I went to install a new tachometer as the previous one was not working. So i picked up an equus 6068 (black to match the dash a little better). Anyways installed everything, followed directions, and the RPMs were bouncing around between 4-5k at idle. Called theyre hotline and guy tells me it must be bad, return it and get another one. Went and hooked up the new one today and the same exact problem. Called the 800 hotline and he tells me to clean out the inside of the distributor. Just figured I would ask here, maybe someone has experienced similar. Between taking the gauge cluster out and messing with these tachs, I'm about 4 hours in and quite frustrated. Thanks in advance. Also, noticed this loose blue wire/socket from previous owner |

It does have the adjustable cylinder option. Messed with that on the first one only to find out from the help line that they come out of the box ready for a v8. I went green wire direct to the distributor. Also tried the inductive to see if I was missing something, but that registered no RPMs. I will run through all the grounds, i know the only one im questioning is the tach is grounded to the metal gauge cluster.
The previous owner cut out a hole and mounted the tach in the center, otherwise I wouldnt have a problem mounting it else where. And i had to laugh as I knew someone would say something like that Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: tach install trouble
I would recommend hooking the green wire to the negative of the coil instead of the distributor itself, like you're thinking there maybe something odd going on with the dizzy and that's freaking out the tach. It should be a quick and easy transfer just to try it out and see if it works.

Re: tach install trouble
Appears to be an HEI dizzy, only one place to hook it up

Well i checked all grounds, everything was grounded by previous owner, so good on him. I even went and ran new grommets to make sure lines were secure. Checked tach, same deal. So i took the dash back out and grounded tach to the cab, still reading the same. So ran a wire from tach to battery ground and it jumped down 500 rpm idling at 35-4500. So for sake of experiment i took the ground of and the needle holds at 4000 then moves and stays still on 5, and then back to still on 4.
HEI distributor with a “idiot proof” spot for the tach’s green wire. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: tach install trouble
Where did you connect the 12v power wire?

I went and switched it to the ign side and the tach didnt even register Now weird thing, in my frustration last night i left the key on and drained thebattery. Ive got a trickle charger on it and the tach is going from 0 to 8 back and forth as long as the chargers on, so its clearly getting power/feedback? Posted via Mobile Device |
Well!
After 30 minutes on the phone with summit support, we ran through everything thats been discussed here. Took the distributor cap off, all well there. Pulled plug wires and back on. Last step was to use the red button on the tach for cylinder adjustment. Suddenly it decided to work today and after adjusting it, shes running right! Maybe because its a day before my birthday, or the man upstairs felt bad for me, it finally worked. Thank you to everyone who gave me their input, I have no logical explanation, other than I did hook up a test light and the previous owner had it connected to a constant hot, so I switched it to IGN . But I cant make sense of why it didnt work last time I did that. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: tach install trouble
Might have been stuck between 8 cylinder and 6 cylinder thus confusing the whole system and picking up signals for both versions at the same time.
