What would cause a float to split open and deteriorate so soon?

Two years ago I replaced the sending unit in the 1970 C10.

Recently, the gauge stopped working and after troubleshooting figured out the float had literally split open and peeled like a banana. See the pic of the old and new sending units side by side for a comparison.

I had ordered a new sending unit just in case...

So, install the new stuff and test it, works fine. Go about working on a few other things with the truck for a couple of days and start the truck and fuel gauge has stopped working again.

I pull the sending unit and the shiny brand new float is now completely stripped and you can just see where it has split along the seam after just a couple of days.

What the heck would cause that?

I use Marathon, 90 octane, ethanol free gas with K100 additive fuel treatment.

Happened to my new one also. Buy a Jeep plastic float for under $10 and replace the brass one per this thread.

Solution applied to China, attempting to give a dam, Dam not giving.

Thanks for posting! My original is still in, 49 years and counting, using ethanol 87!
