FMIC - Not sure I like this
Not going to have the room to mount a intercooler in front of the radiator (AC condenser and tranny cooler). So I mocked up this location. the back hangs down because the tank/outlets are too wide to fit between the rails. At the lowest spot at the back the IC is 1" lower than the engine cradle so I have the needed clearance.
Was thinking a air scoop/pan to direct air thru the IC but now I'm thinking I might loose too much clearance, in my head I actually had more clearance.... I can probably get away with only .5" gap between the IC and the pan at the rear and something like 2-3" below the front bumper to catch the air and flow it past the IC. I think a few folks have done this in the past, any suggestions? Should I get a smaller IC? https://photos.app.goo.gl/5BHN83vtJwyYu2vz6 |

I just did something similar with my trans cooler , was under the passenger side floor but it couldnt keep up with a long drive on hot days , mounted it using a bracket i made to attach to the center core support and angle braces for the rear , bent up a shroud/scoop with .080 aluminum to help grab some extra air theres also a 14" fan mounted on the top side , hope it may help ya ...

Re: FMIC - Not sure I like this
That looks good, nice sheet metal work! I was thinking of a front scoop and enclosing the IC to force as much air as possible. Like the rear catch idea though
How much clearance to the ground will you have? Also you have me thinking about getting my sway bar before I go much further! I don't think it will interfere but better take a look now! Where is yor sway bar in relation to the front of the engine cradle? |
Re: FMIC - Not sure I like this
Have armadillos made it to Ohio yet? Because that has armadillo catcher written all over it. It isn't a case of ground clearance but the fact that when startled, they often jump straight up.
Assuming no armadillos, that looks cool. |

I took a couple pics for ya , the sway bar is bout 13" infont of the cradle depending on where you measure it , its 3" down from the bottom of the frame , 4 1/2" from the center of the idler arm nut and 12 1/2" from the bottom of the bumper , sounds like its gonna be close to where you need to be , could possibly go overtop of it , maybe trim the bottom off the angled crossmember and reinforce it

Re: FMIC - Not sure I like this
Lol No armadillos in ohio that I have seen but a coon could cause some issues I figure !

Re: FMIC - Not sure I like this
yep gonna be close but I think it clears, I ordered up a sway bar last night and will check it out. My support bracket will come off the front of that cross member. I also picked up a slightly smaller IC so it should fit a little better between the rails
Thanks for shooting out those pics very helpful Most Coons in NH will fold the bumper in, hell We have squirrels that will shred a cooler in that location but you have to do what you have to do... |
Re: FMIC - Not sure I like this
If you went with a narrower intercooler could you fit it in behind the grille?
|
Re: FMIC - Not sure I like this
I might be able to fit it, will check when it comes in. If i didn't already have a tranny cooler and AC condensor it would not be a problem. I might think about moving the tranny cooler between the rails

Have you thought about a factory air dam? You could use the 4x4 version which hangs lower (shown on my 2WD), then vent it to allow the air to pass over the cooler.

Re: FMIC - Not sure I like this
That is a great idea, helps blend it in.
