Mirror keeps on falling
Hi all,
Not sure if the mirror is made out of lead or the glass is teflon but I can't get the mirror to stay on the glass. I've tried cleaning the glass, sanding the button, waiting for days... NOTHING works. Any ideas? I'm using the standard Permatex stuff. On my 5th attempt. Thanks! |
Re: Mirror keeps on falling
I bought some 3 M mirror adhesive for one of my rigs the other day because the feedback on it was good. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-...3082785&rt=rud

Re: Mirror keeps on falling
I used 2-3 kinds of Rear View "adhesive" and NONE of them worked.
I bought some of this BOB SMITH INDUSTRIES EPOXY, and used 1 drop, and my mirror has been on since. Of course, not sure what it will be like if I ever need to remove it...? (plus I still have some epoxy left over for the shop - this stuff is GOOD!) |
Re: Mirror keeps on falling
My last experience with this was when I reattached the mirror with the glue kit and later I bumped the mirror slightly when putting the sunshield in place and the mirror fell off. When the mirror fell off it took a big chunk of windshield glass with it, so the glue held too well. I screwed the mirror bracket to the top trim around the windshield. I think the best solution is to get an old street rod style of mirror with a long bracket which would attach to the roof and hang down in approximately the same position. This mirror on the glass idea has got to be one of the worst cost saving ideas in automotive history.

Re: Mirror keeps on falling
I had the same experience and noticed the Permatex package says use at 50-75 degrees. Not much chance of that in Fort Worth in August, but I put my last one on early in the morning and so far it's staying. I think the 3M stuff is better, Oreilly just didn't have any.

clean class .
scuff metal tab . mark metal tab for up and cab in face . glue ONLY metal tab on glass . 24hr later install mirror . used a few brands and no problems . also see if there is a manufactor date on the pack . lots of the stuff sits around for a looooong time. |
Re: Mirror keeps on falling
I am considering the older truck mirror through 71 as an option. LMC, Classic Parts, ebay, etc. sell them.

Here's an option.

Re: Mirror keeps on falling
Had same problem with plastic tab sticking to glass and falling off. Switched to metal and have had no issues

My solution to the falling mirror problem. Found this in the local Pull-a-Part several years ago. Oddly, out of a Chevy Spectrum. I think the Spectrum was a rebadged foreign car. Held in place by 3 screws, just like in the little car. Used the 3 that came with the mirror. IIRC, a $3 fix. The color was a near perfect match for the buckskin tan in my truck. Never hurts to wander through the car section looking for truck parts.
I think the stuff creeping up the mirror is glue residue. It wasn't there when I installed it. I got a couple more on follow up trips as ready replacements. |
Re: Mirror keeps on falling
I think I will mosey through the local Pull A Part and see what is there. I suspect the older 1980s foreign section might be worth a look. I think my 91 CRX had a ceiling mounted mirror that was nice. Those heavy chrome 67-71 mirrors do look nice though.
