1959 Generator
I went to take my 1959 3100 235 engine on a five hour trip and got stuck. The generator pulley cracked causing the belt to brake off. I don't know if the unit seized and cause the pullet to crack.I have the unit on the bench and it spins freely. I had been smelling a burning smell for the past few weeks prior to this happening.Thought it was the exhaust wrap I put on the same time.I took the generator out and only found a few numbers embossed on it. they are m484, 985a, 887a and 11 84 a. I wanted to order another and don't know which number to use. The truck is a 1959 3100 with a 235 engine. thanks

Look at the pulley. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

Re: 1959 Generator
Had the same thing happen years ago on a 61 Chev PU with the same 235. It left me in the middle of San Francisco on a rainy winter night & my Dad had to drive 55 miles with another pulley so I could get going again. It looks like metal fatigue from being out of alignment. They aren’t real thick metal

Re: 1959 Generator
it seems as if the generator turns free. You think its just the pulley and its mis aligned? Would you know where to get a pulley?

Re: 1959 Generator
Do you see a number stamp on the front or rear of the Pulley? If not I’m sure we can still find one, a lot had no numbers.
How many blades are on it and what’s the pulley measure in diameter |
Re: 1959 Generator

May try Ebay. Hit up some of the sellers to check measurment before purchase. Also try calling around to what alternator shops still remain open.

Re: 1959 Generator
Thanks to all, today I contacted a shop that does alternator and starter rebuilds. The guy rebuilt my generator and found a pulley for me. He rebuilt it and installed a new armature with all new components. Going to install it in a few days.

Re: 1959 Generator
Good news! You might want to lay a yardstick across two pulleys to check for misalignment.
