Need alternator suggestions.
My alternator gave up on me tonight, (had to be towed home) :( so I am going to buy a new one.
Should I go with a higher amp alternator such as 80 or 100 amps? I have a mild audio setup, 300 watt amp, two 10"s, so a higher amp alternator would be better right? Any suggestions on brands as well would be greatly appreciated! Thank You... |
I would find a NAPA and buy their best one.
They "were" or "are" made in Atlanta and are very good pieces. |
I would go with a 100amp alternator..as I have a 105 in my vette, and i have a 400 watt system, and fuel injection, and it's fine.

got a 100amp jegs alt on mine puts 14-15 volts up on the gauge

Check out Swerve's site for the 140amp 1-wire alternator conversion from powermaster. I got one and it rocks! I think I only paid $150 or so for it. But it's chrome and of course 1-wire. I took all the spaghetti wires off the alternator and intake. Clean as a whistle now. Swerve even helps with the clean up by identifying the wire colors.

I have a 94 amp alternator from a Camaro. The 84-86 Camaro alternators are identical. They come in 94 and 100 amp versions. I got mine for $35 brand new off ebay. :D
Noticed the difference on the power windows right away too. |
Well... I have a crap alternator that is very much dying. I will need a new one too. I have power everything and a 500 watt system. Im thinking atleast 100 amp.
So should I buy local? It might cost me some more, but if I get a defunct one I can return... hrmmm.... watching the power windows go up at about an inch per second isnt really making me too happy anymore :( |
I wouldnt go less then 94 amp.
If you plan to run a sterio system and a strong electric fan + other accessories I wouldnt go less then 120 amp. Headlights + sterio + electric fan = mad amp hog |
Get one of MSD's new ones. 160 amp. Nice lookin piece!!!

Update: This is kind of late, but since the thread was brought back I thought I'd let you all know what I did.
Sunday night: The alternator went out. Monday night: Call up Summit and order their 100 Amp Chrome One wire Alternator. Wednesday morning: I miss the UPS delivery Thursday Morning: Get the alternator and a new puppy. So I end up playing with the puppy all day and not fixing the truck :D Friday: Installed alternator! Works great and everything seems to be working better than before... |
LOL. Slacker!! J/P. What kind of puppy did you get?

I just picked one up from a local auto electric shop last year. It only cost $43 with core exchange and has been fine so far...
