Trailing arms on 87 Chev Crew
 

I am making a !/2 ton SB out of my 87 crewcab. Just wondering If anyone has installed 66 Chev pickup trailing arms on their conversion. I have a frame I am not using that has trailing arms on it . I intend to beef them up before I install them. I also have the 12 bolt rear which I was thinking of using. Any thoughts? Gord

I have not heard of it. With the amount of work involved, I think I would go with a 4-link and coil overs.

I do not know if this will fit the crew cab frame - but CPP makes a kit for trailing arms on the 73-87 short boxes. I put one on my SWB frame this summer - however I ran into quite a few issues with CPP brackets - especially the coil spring mount being positioned at the wrong angle - had to cut/re-weld it. CPP was not much help when I called and sent pictures about my issues.

Their kit is made to fit to where the frame bends upward under the cab of the SWB, I'm not sure a crew cab would work here as the frame is longer and I am guessing its formed differently. With the right amount of fabrication you could probably make it work somehow I would guess.

Haven't tried mine yet as I am still building the truck, but from what others have said the ride is much improved.

The CPP kit is specifically designed for SWB C10 frames, will not fit anything else. You may be able to use their c-notch brackets and other parts of the kit, but your trailing arm crossmember will have to be custom.

Honestly after my experience with the kit, I'd go with a 4 link coilover setup as well. Was not impressed with the fit of the cpp kit but it's all in the truck now so I'm going to rock it.

c & k 30 1ton frames or even c20 crew cab frames are about 2" taller and the whole middle section from the firewall area to past the rear axle is totally different spacing for brackets like this . the frame hangs down the extra 2" on the bottom side . this is why the 2wd and 4wd trans - tcase cross members are specific to these frames .

i am not saying you cant make a filler piece to make up the space gap . but it by no means is a bolt in thing to do .

if you can fab i am sure you could make your own mount setup for the stuff you want to do .

With as much trouble as it was on my truck with a "bolt-in" kit just do a 2,3 or 4 link and save yourself the headaches.

Check out No Limit. They are a vendor and post over in the suspension section. They have a setup for 1-tons.

Agree with others....triangulated 4link and coilovers....wouldnt waste my time trying to do trailing arms

obviously you guys have more money to throw around than I do. I am a retired firefighter.I also have a frame with a trailing arm setup. I have already cut the frame to short box. I have a welder,I'm also a mechanic .And I'm not afraid to try anything. I have more time than money. If I wanted to go with the shocks I wouldn't have asked about trailing arms. Gord
