Carpet for AD's with tranny tunnel
 

I'm trying to find somewhere to buy "good" carpet for my '53. Had to make a tranny tunnel which sticks up about 4-5 inches. Would like to find some molded but if not easy to form to the tunnel. Looked on the site but didn't find much help. Thanks for the leads and any advise.

latex backed carpet is made to be easily formed using heat. dont use a heat gun though, use a hand steamer.

That looks great. What kind of carpet is that and how did you get it to mold to the floor so good?

Cool, looks like what I used in my '52 from Lowes. It has held up real good. My wife wants a little thicker pile this go around. But will definately keep this in mind, it does look good.

You can buy automotive carpet from a local shop or online. I like to use the Bentley or Essex carpet. A garment steamer will make it much easier to shape the carpet.

I made a butcher paper pattern first, then strategically cut it until it laid smooth, and transferred that to the carpet. I glued around the edges to hold it firmly. There is generic sound deadener under it too. The tricky part was nailing the cutouts for the cup holders!

To cover undulating floors, upholsterers often make their carpets multi-piece with binding around the edges for a clean look. Like my former Model A, below:

I'd take a look at the Daytona Weave from Auto Custom Carpets (ACC):

They'll sell it to you by the yard. It's the deluxe stuff they put in '55-'57 Bel Airs. It's a little spendy, but you don't need much.

In your case, I'd do it in a two-piece, with the smaller of the two pieces covering only the tunnel. Cut it out yourself, then take it to an upholsterer and have the edges of the tunnel piece and the door edges bound.

Thanks for the replies fellers. I ended up finding a site called stockinteriors.com got a couple yards of 80/20 and jute shipped for 200 bucks. Should be waiting on me at home today. I will let you know how it is next week.
