Where To Get One of These?
 

What are they called?

I’ve searched online using Model A or Model T trunk. Fiberglass box, trunk, round top box, etc. Lots of stuff comes up but nothing like this.

Any help appreciated.

Try searching "vintage ice chest." I came up with a few that looked like that, although I suspect the owner of yours may have removed the handle and fitted it with a key lock.

What an interesting box. It may be a vintage cooler but I can't find any that seem to have as large a lid. So I thought maybe I could find some information about the original build, or the original owner, or some pictures from a car show, but no luck so far. The seller's phone number is listed with a Rhode Island car dealership A&T Auto Sales. Andy's House of Customs doesn't exist although Andy's East Coast Speed is a DBA for Andersen Automotive at 321 S Main St in Providence so maybe they were involved in the original build?

After much looking, I am wondering if it's not a vintage freezer or a reproduction of one, laid on its side?

Thanks guys! I thought about the vintage cooler but decided it isn't one of those. At least not one shaped like any I've ever seen.

1P2M - That fridge you posted really IS the right a shape but I have a hunch it's not one of those. I certainly could be wrong. How did you find all that information from the photo I posted? I don't know how to use Google (or anything else) to back-search a photo.

Looks like possibly a luggage trunk for an early 1930's Chevy car.

Well... I noticed that the photo was from an Ebay auction. So I started by searching Ebay for TF Chevy trucks.

If you haven't seen it, the Ebay description has a lot of detailed information which should have been very helpful. So I tried a bunch of attempts at Googling the name of the shop that built the truck (there's a brass plate on the cowl that reads Andy's House of Customs Rhode Island), Goodguys' photo archives, car shows in NY and RI, HAMB archives, etc, etc. I did try using the Google reverse image search but it didn't find any useful pictures. Eventually, searching the seller's phone number brought up multiple vehicle listings at a car dealer in Rhode Island. So I went to the Rhode Island Business Portal to search their Database of registered businesses which gave me the information about Andy's East Coast Speed and the car dealership.

As far as the refrigerator, I just kept bouncing back and forth between the picture of the truck and pictures of different things online. Eventually it dawned me that the box in the truck might not have been built to lay down.

Ooohh... That looks close. I'm figuring the container in the truck should be about 32" wide based on the distance to the bed sides. So that might be a big trunk. Maybe a Packard or other high end car? Studebaker?

Holy black boxes, Batman! This might be exactly it! Dan?

That’s not exactly it but I’d be happy if I could find one like it. $499 is pricey but it’s no longer available so not to worry!

I searched on Model A and Model T trunks never thinking about other car manufacturers. I’ll do some re-research now!

Everything like this (that I like) has been SO high priced. I was originally thinking one of those smaller, aluminum diamond plate boxes but I really don't think they go with the look of the truck. MAybe I'll not use a bed box at all but if I do I'll consider making one myself.

I know squat about working with fiberglass other than the few pictures Ogre has posted. I get the general idea of release agents, draping the 'glass or T shirt fabric over shapes. Maybe I could figure it out with a few sacrificial false starts. If I do I'll post a thread. In the meantime I'll start looking for YouTube videos.

PS: Picking up my truck today! (confirming call to paint shop @ 10am, wish me luck). TOO many photos (probably) coming soon.

Dan,

If it makes you feel any better- those 20's-30's automobile trunks haven't moved in price for about 30 years- I remember Dad selling a pair of those back in the mid 80's that were for Packards, in nice shape, for about $250 a piece.

Oh, and as Mrs. Yankee always says- great taste is never cheap :D
