Need help with paint . No code on spid or build sheet

My 72 is painted ochre now but it doesn't match the interior , door jams or the original bed paint. I'm posting pics of the spid and build sheet. All I can get off the build is it's a ZP3 special paint. The bed and interior are a goldish metallic color. Very close to the ochre but not the same. Last picture is of the inside passenger door . Definite metallic color.

4001 is the special paint RPO on the SPID - If it had words there, that’s all it would say - “Special Paint”.
Can you show an overall truck and interior pic?

Thanks I'm going to get a 1/2 pint to do a test panel.

Re: Need help with paint . No code on spid or build sheet

I can't identify the color from the picture (neither my eyes nor knowledge of paint codes is sufficient)

However the SPID is a strong clue that the color might be another GM color from that year (but not usually offered on trucks) or a potentially random "fleet" color, specified by the customer (school bus yellow? power company? do you know anything of the ownership history that might help suggest that?)

The good news is that if you have a spot of good original color (non faded, like interior or underhood) a good modern paint shop will have the tools to match the original color (from a spot on the dash, etc.) using spectral analysis equipment. They can then repaint parts or all of the truck to match (and give you touch up paint, etc.)

I agree, looks like it. 71-72 GM color - I've normally only seen it on Chevelles.
One of my favorite colors, bet the whole truck would look incredible in it too.

I'm the second owner. Truck was a private vehicle no business usage. I'll take the glove box door with me when I get the paint and have them gun it. Sucks no code on anything

I worked for a Chevrolet dealer in those days, so this color popped up in my memory. One reason is because I was pronouncing it "play-ser", when the actual pronunciation is "plass-er" for the Spanish word "placer" in gold mining terminology. I recall seeing it on the other cars in the Chevrolet line like Novas and Monte Carlos. Not sure about the big cars.

Your truck is the same color as my 72 C20. Let me see if I can figure out how to post the SPID for my truck as it lists the paint code. Under hood and interior is the same color as yours.

Does your paint have metallic in it . I took off an exterior molding and the paint under it is also metallic. Also the bed is the same as the interior. I'm going this week to the jobber and have them gun the bed and dash. Bed is not faded as it had a camper in it since new.

No, no metallic. Just the color on the SPID.

OK guys, GM paint code 53 is the same formula, but goes by different names. I had a devil of a time finding this actual formula. It's called Camaro Gold; Placer Gold; Nugget Gold; and may have other names as well.

If this is the paint you use, it will look very much like this:

Hah!!!! Just don't park it next to mine....

Seriously, I've never seen this color on a truck... And if it's the correct factory paint, you've seriously got a one-off in my opinion.

It's a great color. You'll either love it or hate it... people fall into one category or the other. I've been working like crazy to convince myself not to shoot the same color on the Camaro I'm working on now. I personally, love the color...

Good Luck and great choice!! (Although I'm somewhat biased...)

OP has a Special Paint code, so it cannot be dark yellow unless it was done in a non-standard two tone (ie other than Deluxe, Conventional, Custom etc).

The different names are for different car lines, and even different years. You should see how many names GM #11 White has had over the years. Back in the day, if I painted a vehicle roof Or a whole car) white, I'd just ask for GM #11 White. It was so commonly used that it was usually already mixed, and just needed to be shaken up.

I had them check the dash ,doors jambs and firewall. It's the factory paint.

So does anyone know what "PT PER DIRECT ENTRY HUSKY PROMOTION PLEASE RUSH" means? I know what please rush means, but what about the first part, is that "Paint per Husky Promotion"? If so, could that be why its the color it is?

Never connected the Husky promo as anything but that may explain why this decal is on the clove box door.

Thats interesting. I may be way off but Husky was an oil company out of Wyoming and had gas stations too. Maybe it was some kind of promo for them? Just a really wild guess.
