1956 longbed going on a 2001 Tahoe Chassis, how long are the sidesteps on a short bed
 

Hi Folks,

I am well into a project to morph a 56 3200 onto a Tahoe chassis. I had to customize the bed length and I can't seem to find the measurement of the short bed side steps. The length of the bed at the front had to be shortened several inches, and the short bed steps might fit. If anyone has this measurement it would be greatly appreciated.

Tried to upload a few photos but got a token failure message.

And yes, miraculously it fits!

YES! Thank you, that helps.

Yes, I have lots of photos so far. I will have to compile them in a fileshare location for others to benefit from (assuming anyone is crazy enough to embark on something like this). I am using the floor, firewall, HVAC and all the 01 electronics and mechanics inside and out. Many hours of stitching and overcoming engineering challenges. The tightest part is the radiator, ac and core support area. Had to re-engineer the firewall air intake system as well.

I am pretty far along with the heavy lifting. I probably should have used a smaller HVAC unit but you know what they say about 20/20 hindsight...

By the way, if anyone has an idea as to where I can find plain steel wheels so I can use the old fashioned hubcaps on a modern big disk brake set up that would be great. All of the obvious sources (Wheel Vintiques etc.) can't supply a wheel that will work with the right offset and clear the brakes. I am actually thinking about modifying these to look old (close up the holes and paint them black).

Welcome...as you know that's gonna be a lotta fab work...you should start a build thread in the build section...
Having to use positive offset wheels is gonna be a issue to find stock looking wheels..you could have them custom made..but $$$$...I'd just find some nice aftermarket wheels that'll fit and roll with it..

You could modify some Tahoe police wheels.

Good luck with it, I tried to get my HVAC unit out of my 93 to fit under the stock dash. That came to a stop very quickly. You look like you have got it figure out with that firewall. Should be super cool.

I kind of like the rims you have from the tahoe, the look nice with that fender. Good luck on the wheels, and if you need more measurement, let us know.

Good idea tudor...I hadn't thought about cop wheels...some even have a mini cap in the center...

It turns out that the factory offset alloys (16x7 with 31mm offset just fits perfect inside the wheel wells. All the options I looked at shoved them outboard. I am trying to keep it looking 100% stock on the outside....painted bumpers...plain wheels...etc. I also thought of getting the police steel wheels (same size and offset I think) and closing up the holes. I will drill into that one further. Thanks for the tip.

I obviously had to go with electric fans, and there's about 1/4" between them and the engine accessories...

What do you mean by closing up the holes?
