1972 GMC VIN Question
 

VIN TCE242F505015 says the truck is 5015th truck built at the Flint Michigan plant. Does anyone know what month this truck would be built in? And what day of the month?

If the original seat is still in the truck, look underneath the seat under the springs for the original build sheet....

It will have these details listed on the sheet...

That's not how that works.

The last six digits are a serial number assigned in sequential fashion, but do not represent the final build order:

a) Vehicle build can be shuffled between body shop and paint shop, and again between paint and trim/final line, in order to allow for extended repair, balance workload of downstream operations (ie, can't have too many A/C jobs in a row, can't have too many manual trans jobs in a row, can't have too many 4wd vehicles in a row, can't have too many red trucks in a row!, etc) or keep the downstream operations going in the event of a breakdown in cab shop or paint.

b) Various nameplates can have their own starting sequence point and are built down the same line (ie, Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, etc). Typically every ninth job was a GMC with the line full of Chevy's in between.

c) Flint had two assembly lines under the same roof, each with their own unique VIN sequence numbers, and each counting up independently of the other based on line rate, number of productive shifts, model mix, downtime as a result of breakdowns, strikes, etc.

The General Assembly (ie, "GA") build sequence number is the one that defines when the vehicle came off the line, but it is not recorded for posterity other than on the original build sheet.

You should be able to narrow it down to a couple week period, or maybe even within a couple days (depending on what other boundary samples you find) but you are not going to be able to know the exact number (ever) or the exact day (unless you happened to be standing there when it came off the end of the line).
