1966 k10 axle/disc swap
Hey there! I’m curious as to how much fabrication is required to swap in a later (70’s and up) front axle and disc brakes into a 1966 K10? I found a decent k20 8 lug front/rear axle set with all parts (corporate 10 with warn hubs & 14 bolt rear.) I was wondering if this would pretty much bolt in to the 1966. I know there’s a forum on here about the swapping process, but it didn’t mention the amount of fabrication required.
Thanks! Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 1966 k10 axle/disc swap
I Just recently did this. My donor axles were from a 1973 k20. The full float 14 bolt rear end was 100% bolt in with my 62 k10. I think yours will need shock mounts tinkered with. The front matching dana 44 bolted right in but I had to remove the shock mounts from the original axle and transfer them to the newer axle.
The front driveshaft bolted right in. I had to get a conversion U joint for the rear. The way I ran the front brake lines I was able to use the front factory length brake hoses for a 73 k20. For the rear brake hose, the factory 73 unit is no where near long enough. I ordered a 6 inch extended rear brake line and I still feel it is too short. I am still tinkering with getting the brakes working correctly at the moment. It stops now but very weak and low pedal. |
