shorty spark plug
I want to replace my spark plugs,,,I have a SB 350. I running headers on the block,,,any suggestions as to what might be a good plug?

Re: shorty spark plug
I had a box of shorty header plugs and they were NOT that much shorter. The only thing that worked for me was ceramic boots. One had to be custom ground to clear the header, but that's the ONLY way I was able to stop burning through boots, etc.
Otherwise, Accel makes them if you want to try them. Aka "truck" plugs for some reason, they're yellow and a few mm shorter. |

Re: shorty spark plug
Punchline: the shortest plug in that thread is the Accel I referred to. I didn't even know about the intermediate ones!

Re: shorty spark plug
Accels work great for me.

Re: shorty spark plug
I had the same problem when installing headers on my sb 350. Bought a set of high temp braided boots and slipped them over the plug boots. No more problems. They are rated to 1200 deg. Summit and several other manufacturers sell them. Work great.

Re: shorty spark plug
Ok,,,,got a set of accel shorts, whats the best gap for them when running headers?
|
Re: shorty spark plug
Depends on your ignition. Are you running an HEI or the original distributor? I wouldn't think plug gap would change from standard to shorty plugs. Iridium plugs come pre-gapped and should not be regapped.

Re: shorty spark plug
I'm running HEI with headers,,,stock 350 SB.

Re: shorty spark plug
.045 seems to be the consensus on other gap threads for HEI

Re: shorty spark plug
I checked with my mechanic,,,,he said 35 to 40 would be fine. They were set at about 36, installed them,,,,runs great.

Re: shorty spark plug
I run .045 with an HEI on a 72 350. Runs great. .045 is pretty much standard for the HEI converted 350 from what I hear. It would probably run with .035-.040 if that's what you want to run. Try it both ways and see how it runs and what it does to your mileage.

Re: shorty spark plug
Stock points is 0.035, HEI is 0.045

Re: shorty spark plug
Accel here .. works great for me..

Re: shorty spark plug
So far , so good, plugs set around 36/38. Four barrel kicks in great,,,smooth.
