NOS 4x4 cap on eBay

Not a set, but maybe the start of one for that serious restoration. He wants $275 for the one, I paid $1500 for a set of 4 8-bolts, so that seems to be about what they're worth! Amazing!

Note that this single is the stainless type, generally associated with 73-75, not the chrome 69-72 style, in case someone is trying to complete an original set. Personally, I prefer the stainless ones, they are repairable and can be polished. The chrome is awesome when it's in good condition, but once it's not or once it's dented, it's more difficult to repair. Still, it is an NOS GM in the wrapper, hard to come by. I'd probably drive with bare steelies before I'd pay that much, but that's just me. Full sets are even harder to come by. I'll probably lose my mind if my chromies ever get stolen...

Dang! Thanks for catching that! I figured at that price, with it advertised as such, it would really be the 67-72 style.

I'd never pay that for a 73+ cap, that's for sure.

That's my ad on Ebay. And yes I also prefer the stainless, it's the better hubcap.
Stainless is much more durable, 98% of the chromies are gone due to splits, thin metal.
If you can find and buy the NOS chrome like Dave did (a lot of us remember that) then that is the best looking hubcap ever made
and worth the money on a fine restoration.

Re: NOS 4x4 cap on eBay

Thanks Larry. And for everyone reading this - I probably could have worded my comment a little more clearly - I actually LIKE bare steelies without the caps on 4x4s. So I might not pay the same as the next guy unless I found a smokin deal on them (and I did several years ago, thank goodness). Didn't mean it to sound like I was making a value statement on this particular piece, but as I re-read it, I can see that it might have come across that way. Apologies if that's how it sounded - it's just my personal preference (ok, and my cheap nature :))

This thread started out all wrong comparing the value of a cap that only came on a 3/4t 4wd Z84 or YE9 (or option on others, which was very uncommon), in either material, to the far more common closed caps that came on 2wds, rear of 4wd, and single rear 1ts. All these 8-lugger caps are valuable, but the front 4wd cap is way out there all by itself in value, just like extreme bend tow hooks.

Agreed!

If you're right I'll edit the post, but if you're right, the ad strikes me as VERY wrong because it clearly reads 67-72.

What should the AD say? I'll edit my post to reflect the ad. Seems to me I got fooled by the ad, and the poster is on this thread so I'll be gentle, but if that's a 73+ cap, that's... well, I'll wait for the answer.

Wanted to clarify my earlier statement... All I was saying is that that 4x4 cap is nice and very valuable. I would happily run that on my truck.

Re: NOS 4x4 cap on eBay

The open center fronts are easily worth double the $ of the rear hubcaps in like condition.
When advertising stainless steel hubcaps I sometimes use 69-72 or 69-73 or 73-77.
Either way there is always confusion with buyers on what fits what.

The ad clearly states "stainless steel construction". And the buyer can return the item if not satisfied.

Dave I'm surprised you got so upset over my ad but there's no effort to mislead anyone. And no need to be gentle on my account, straight talk is good.

I sold this set last week, gold bowties, ad said '69-77', just an example.

Re: NOS 4x4 cap on eBay

I don't know about all that. I never looked at the listing. All I was saying is that K/20 cap is an apple and your caps are oranges, so not the best comparison on price. They are all worth a lot of moolah, though! As far as chrome 69-72 vs stainless 73-75 goes that is the norm, some 69-72s came through in stainless and some 73-75s came through as chrome. So the important thing to me is knowing the material. They are all the same stamping with minor differences being 69-72 outty/73-75 inny and 69-72 black center/unpainted 73-75 center, both can be converted to the other.

Re: NOS 4x4 cap on eBay

NOS hubcaps are always an interesting topic, but as usual supply and demand kicks in. IMO, the rarest of the rare are the first issue chrome over brass 3/4 ton 4x4, then chrome over brass 2x4 3/4 ton GMC, then chrome over brass 3/4 ton Chevy. These were used from '69-mid '72. Second would be the chrome over steel ('73 only) 3/4 tons in the same 4x4 , 2x4 GMC Chevy breakdown. Then come the stainless ' 3/4 ton 73-'75 in the same GMC Chevy 4x4 2x4 breakdown. Then come the painted steel all years. All these hubcaps are similar in styling, the difference is in construction material and paint schemes. 95% of the public would not know the difference between '69-'75 hubcaps.
