Does hydraboost have any special power steering pump reqs?

Subject line says it all - I remember installing one in my Pontiac years ago and being pretty underwhelmed with the level of assist. But I just used my stock pump as-is. I'd like to reuse it in a vehicle with enough cam that it doesn't have great assist. But it's got the original 1969 power steering pump.

Does a hydraboost need or benefit from any kind of up-powered pump?

Thanks!

A 2nd return port in the pump.
Can T them but is problematic

I'm running a T, it does not seem to be a problem. I have thought about testing this mod to see if I notice any difference. I like the hydro setup. I would like to upgrade the pump though. Next time I have the fluid drained I will test this mod. I took the piston and spring from my old pump before I turned it in for core.

Anyhow, here's a quick read. And yes, can benefit.

Stock pump with T fitting on my hydraboost setup. Going on 5 years now with no problems.

Spirited driving...
High school kid stuff.
Would spit the return hose off the brake booster return and spray hot oil onto hot headers always a good time.

Spitting the return hose off after spirited driving is always an installation using a small pulley on the power steering pump...turning the pump too fast...

The power steer pulley should be approx same size as damper drive pulley...one to one preferably.

Anyone ever have a power steering pump fail on them with hydro-boost? One reason not to love hydro-boost so much.

Was a tbi serpentine set up.
All stock pulleys and always a giant mess.

Put a vacuum booster on it, no more problems.

No, never heard of that! Obviously, diesel trucks have been running something like them for a long time, which is the only reason I trust them...

I’ve got the stock pump with a brass t in my setup. No complaints. Gm used the t in the early hydraboost equipped trucks.

Good function and longevity is always contingent on proper installation/combination of parts. Regarding the concern over a failing steering pump - I agree with the OP in that these systems have been used on diesel trucks for a long time without a history of failures. Besides, if the pump fails and you lose all hydraulic assist the system doesn't leave you without brakes. You are left with what equates to manual brakes. Not great, but it will allow you to stop safely.

The accumulator will give you two to four power assisted stops after engine shut down or pump failure causes loss of pressure. :chevy:

I was going to leave that one alone my self but your exactly right. Even after those 2-4 stops it’s no different than a vacuum booster when the engine isn’t running.

I would also agree with the original poster, I have a used 12 year, to me, truck and the only thing that is about to fail is that pump.

go figure, that and the transmission.
