What mufflers Are you using?

I have long tube headers and chambered mufflers on my sbc 69 c10.
Thinking about going to glass packs right off the headers.
What are all of you using?

I am using Hooker cast iron headers and Flowmaster Series 40 knockoffs with pipes all the way back on the Panel Truck. They had a bad drone at about 60 mph so I added "J" pipes behind the mufflers and it sounds great now.

Excuse my ignorance......what is a J pipe?

Short pipes that are shaped like a "J". They weld into the exhaust pipes behind the muffler. They have to be a certain length depending on what RPM the drone occurs. If you type J pipe exhaust into Google it will explain them.

Wow, I had no idea.....I'm 56 years old and have never heard of that!
I didn't google it but does the tone change much?
Thanks Locdoc!

I wouldn’t even consider a traditional style glass pack, but a Magnaflow style muffler would be ok. And I think tailpipes that exit the rear are a must have as well.

Personally, I want to make good power and be more quiet these days. I’m running Dynomax Hemi Turbo mufflers on my Jimmy and have a second set for my short step when the big block goes in.

I have a set of Jones Turbo Tubes attached to the end of the headers on my AMC 360 in my CJ-5 and that’s always enough to remind me what I don’t want in my truck!

The guy at the muffler shop I go to had never heard of them either. He couldn't believe what a difference they made in the exhaust sound after he got them installed..... Exhaust still sounds good just no drone at highway speeds.

Here is a chart to calculate the length you need.

You can't just make them any length and expect them to work. That's why I recommend doing some reading on them. I think mine are 23.5 inches long.

I think you can count on a pretty annoying drone with that combination. If you like noise it should work well.

I'm running 3" spintech mufflers, x pipe, hooker headers. It's little loud for me from the inside, but I like the sound from the outside.

For a more mellow tone, I've heard great things about Magnaflow mufflers.

If I'm reading the chart correctly your drone was at 2150 rpm?

I wonder how J pipes compare to a resonator?

I'm running some kind of Turbo mufflers. Think they are Hookers. I've run turbo mufflers in just about everything I put performance exhaust on. I really like them. Much better sounding than stock, but still quiet enough for a daily driver.

I'm running Chip Foose Magnaflows on my 71 with dual exhaust all the way to the rear corners. I'm running Stainless Works full Length headers from
https://stainlessworks.net/

Aluminum 2.5" tubes.
They are nice for normal driving but when you get on it they will talk to you!

Are you trying to make everyone hate you and give yourself a migraine every time you drive it?

Anyway, what's your end goal for sound? Aggressive? Tough, but subtle? Vintage 60s-70s sound? Smooth idle and cruise, but really talks at hard throttle? Piss off your neighbors at 6:00 AM?

Re: What mufflers Are you using?

I really like my big DynoMax. Quiet and low-toned at idle, NO drone at cruise, but loud and angry when under load. Seems like the best of all worlds.

Re: What mufflers Are you using?

Ive got headers and had a set of turbo mufflers, sounded pretty good but a little on the quiet side. When I did my engine swap, i swapped out for a aet of hooker max flows. The performance is there, but still rather quiet and wimpy sounding?

1970 c10
350cu TH350 auto
Mostly stock engine with a few upgrades
Summit ceramic long tube headers
Custom 2 1/2" exhaust
Flowmaster 40 series delta flow
H pipe
Pipes come out under bumper
No drone at all.
Not too loud. Rumples nice at idle
Barks when you step on it.
Normal driving you can hear radio etc. not obnoxious.
A couple videos of the sound. Quiets down after engine warmed up too

My challenger has flowmasters and is screams a lot (loud) and my c10 402 has magnaflow and they are perfect

on my 509 merlin3 I'm using Dynomax ultra flo round.I shake my neighbors coffee cup when i drive by his house.

Re: What mufflers Are you using?

I was hoping the dynomax ultra flows would be a little quieter. Maby the oval ones are.

Re: What mufflers Are you using?

I am running a set of spintechs. Long tube headers with an H pipe and the pipes run all the way to the rear. So loud you cannot hear the stereo or talk to the passenger at idle or cruising. I'm going to swap out to some magnaflows in the spring.

Spintechs were cool for a bit, but not any more.

Re: What mufflers Are you using?

Keep in mind most manufacturers offer several models and types of mufflers. So to say flowmaster is too loud or maganflow more quiet really isn't accurate.
Need to specify which muffler you are referring to
Good idea to go on youtube and see vids on various brands and models.
Hope that helps.

Amen, thank you for that. Gotta be apples to apples or its useless information.

I spent weeks researching and am still dying to know a great sounding muffler with little to no drone, can carry on a conversation with your significant other in the cab, but still has some bark when you mash the pedal.

The other thing I can testify to is hp changes the sound as well as camshaft. A lopey cam makes any exhaust sound awesome!

Pipes actually make a difference as well. For years, I had crimp-bent muffler shop pipes with my Magnaflows. It always sounded good at WOT, but the idle always sounded insignificant. Last year, I finally had mandrel bent stainless pipes with the same Magnaflow mufflers. The sound was completely different. Free-flowing pipes and the material have as much to do with sound as the mufflers.
