Just got an NV4500, can't find the oil

2 Attachment(s)
I just picked up a 93 NV4500 to replace my SM465. It's pretty clean, no signs of leaks, oil looked like new, and had a rebuild sticker on the PTO cover (I pulled it off in the pics). I drained it, and will be cleaning it up and painting it to get it ready to go in. I'm waiting on my t-case adapter from AA to put my figure 8 NP205 behind it, and I'm going to drill/tap the holes to use my SM465 bell housing. I have 80 miles on my full build of my 57, and already taking it apart to upgrade to the NV4500. This thing shifts through all gears in less movement of the shifter than going through 1 gear on the 465!

I can't locate the GM or Dodge oil, but I can find the Amsoil MTG that specifies it is for NV4500 transmissions. Anyone have and reviews or concerns using the Amsoil, before I buy some?

Ok I'll call tomorrow and see what they say. I searched that number last night, and I was coming up with "no longer available". Some sites were showing a new number available, but I wasn't sure if it was the same stuff.

I think they do have a new part number...but when you tell them nv4500 they'll know what you need...I think it was about $140 worth...

Re: Just got an NV4500, can't find the oil

I'll call them tomorrow and see what they have. Yep, that's a kick in the jewels when you have to buy a gallon of oil for $140, but it's the right stuff and it lasts a long time.

This is what I'm finding that it crosses over to. Most places that I see this, it's over $35 a qt, but Summit has it for $22

Ida swore I had the p/n in my build thread from when I bought the oil...but now I can't find it..
I'd get the number from the dealer...

Yeah, from everything I've read, I'm nervous about getting exactly the right stuff.

I read through that. Which one did you end up using, and how do you like it?

Haven't made the trans swap yet. However, in gathering all the parts I went to both my local GM and Dodge dealer about 2 months ago. Dodge said they will no longer sell it as it was recently discontinued. The salesman actually showed me the recent bulliton corporate sent out stating such. He had a few quarts on hand at around $23/qt.
Then I went down the street to the Chevy dealership. They can still get it at $33/qt but they don't stock it. The twist is you have to order it in quantities of 6.
I wasn't ready to commit to that so I went down the street to the local pub and drank large quantities of beer.
That's about where I left off. In hindsight, I probably drank enough thinking about it the tab would have covered the cost of the fluid.

My dealer had it in stock...

Re: Just got an NV4500, can't find the oil

I called 1 dealer here, waited on hold 20 minutes at another one before I hung up. The one I talked to, i gave the part number that i found at summit racing and asked if they had it, and if it was right for the NV4500. Part number 10-4119, AC-Delco. He reluctantly said that it appears to be the right oil, and they could only get 2 quarts today. It was reluctant enough that I'm not sure it was the right oil or not.

Old57 12-27-2018 12:19 PM

Re: Just got an NV4500, can't find the oil

I just called a parts supplier, and they said the GM 12346190 supersedes to AC-Delco 10-4059, and then that Supersedes to AC-Delco 10-4119. So with that info, the oil at Summit racing is correct.

Re: Just got an NV4500, can't find the oil

years ago i found the dodge stuff was a hair bit cheeper .

and i have read a lot of guys fill threw the shifter hole and add 1/2 qrt extra to help lube the front input gear bearing as the stock level is a tad low from were it should have been set at .

Old57 12-27-2018 01:39 PM

Re: Just got an NV4500, can't find the oil

Yes, the Mopar fluid is discontinued too. I plan to add extra because of the stock oil fill level issue.

Re: Just got an NV4500, can't find the oil

When I picked mine up from the trans shop I asked about adding extra fluid because I read it somewhere about adding extra...they said dont...there was no need for it...

Actually no. It might be worth the call to ask them for some documentation.
