Member GR8-68 , He made me 2 sets 1 Ash and 1 Black Walnut . Very nice job . The Ash is going in a lt green 67 short bed , I plan to thin the paint enough to use it as stain and then clear coat it to a mirror finish . I just wiped it with a damp rag to show the grain . :chevy:

Re: Wood Bed Floor Questions?
I used the southern yellow pine from classic parts(not classic industries) it was B better. Cheap and already dadoed. It has tight grain and is cheap. I used tung oil on mine. I do use my bed hard at times, and the truck is an outside dog.
Here's a post I did when I replaced my wood. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=7657989 j |

I used old barn board. Ran it through a planer, table saw then 3 coats of clear.

Re: Wood Bed Floor Questions?
PM GR8-68 ...he might be able to help you with the 4 bolt hole positions that need to be drilled.
The wear strips do not need bolt holes thru the timber boards. BTW...be wary of big box store pine....being in Washington you should have ready access to decent milled pine.... Remember the wear strips need rebated grooves cut in them for the wear strips to locate into. :chevy::chevy::chevy: |
Re: Wood Bed Floor Questions?
Southern yellow pine is a ton better than the pine you will find in a BORG store. It'll rot in a sickening hurry, unless you are protecting it from the weather.

Re: Wood Bed Floor Questions?
The clear needs to be a true spar varnish for max durabilty/longevity. Spar varnish is marine grade with extra uv filters. Its not that easy of a job to reclear so use the good stuff and it'll last longer. Polyurathane clear from lowes won't last. I use Epifanes high gloss. Find it on web. Not cheap at about $30 a quart. Takes about 2 qts. To do it right.

I spent weeks on my bed! I'm not a carpenter. I used Marine Spar varnish as panhead says. I believe got my wood from Mar-K? Wasn't cheap, but was good wood.

I used a product I found recommended on this site from KBS Coatings. It's called Diamond Coat clear coat. It's a epoxy, like POR 15 (which tested great on Mar-K's test) but is clear, UV stable, and developed for outdoor use. Like others have said, I coated both sides, in the grooves, and the ends. You want a complete seal of the board. I think it looks pretty good.... Best of Luck! |
