Could you order cab lights on any truck cab?

That's my question, but Im more interested in the molded in cab lights on 71 and 72's. When you were buying a truck and having it put together with the options you wanted were you able to order molded in cab lights for any model truck cab?

My shortbed 2wd '71 had them (we filled the holes). It never made sense. I suppose the cab could have been swapped but the evidence didn't really support it. What was the RPO?

I think starting in 69 you could order the raised pad roof lights on any c-10 or c-20.

Yep, 69-72 were the raised pad years, RPO U01, 69 was the only year for the hockey puck style lens.

On our 69 1/2 ton we have factory "hockey puck" clearance lights.
I suspect this truck was ordered as a fleet purchase in California.

Oh I had no idea that the raised pads started in 69. For some reason I was thinking they were the add on with the chrome base lights up until 71

This truck was just posted in the Craigslist threwad on this site. Although only one pic of the truck I'm pretty sure its a legit original truck. To me this one kind of proves you could order options al a carte back then as its a base custon truck with the factory cab lights and chrome front bumper and looks to be a chrome rear sport bumper too and in a nice two tone paint scheme and its a 6 cyl with 3OTT and no power steering.

My 72 factory 4wd short box half ton Cheyenne Super has them and they are listed on the SPID. There aren't many short boxes around with them, but they could be ordered on any truck during those years.

Yep, all 69-72 10-30 Chevy or 1500-3500 GMC could have that option. It was a style thing as much as mandated for 10k#+. They were also an option on Suburbans

No raised pads on suburbans. They used the old style with the chrome through 72.

Re: Could you order cab lights on any truck cab?

No raised pod were needed due to the higher roof line. I could be remembering wrong, but I have seen the same lights used as the pickups on 69-72 Suburbans. You don't see them on many Suburbans. Hard to know who added what.

Here’s a K/20 suburban I had with factory roof marker lights.

Was it an option on C30 and 3500 trucks or did they automatically get them from the factory?

I thought dealer added the roof lights on the light trucks any thing over a 2 ton had them my 1965 3 ton had them on my Bobtail

Re: Could you order cab lights on any truck cab?

Dealer could add lights on any truck. But they couldn't add in the raised bump lights. And I believe SpecialK has stated on the large tonnage sized trucks they were mandatory. Probably would have been the raised bump styles 69-72 ... Course I could just be talking outta my tail pipe =)

Re: Could you order cab lights on any truck cab?

Pre-69: U01 RPO landed the buyer (or ordering dealer) the Yankee 77 style cab lights.
These could also be purchased afterward and added on by dealer or owner (but there would be no "U01" on the SPID).

69-72: U01 got the buyer (or ordering dealer) a raised pad roof and fireman's hat lenses from the factory only.
However, Yankee 77 style cab lights were sold well into the mid-70s and could be added to a non-pad cab for ANY year truck, by a dealer or an owner.

73+: no mo pads, U01 just got you the fireman's hats mounted directly to the common roof. These could also be dealer or owner added later on, as could the Yankee 77 style cab lights.

Technically speaking, the fireman's hat lenses can be added to a 69-72 non-raised pad roof as well (just like the factory did in 73 and onward), but this isn't often seen.

I thought raised pads were simply designed into the roof in 69 to match the flat round base of the "new" fireman hat lens choice by GM for the light duty trucks - which is perfectly round and flat just like the raised pads - to ensure a good seal, etc. I'm not trackin how roof line height comes into play(?)

I also just assumed (dangerous, I know ;)) that because at least SOME light duty trucks had to have the cab lights (so they were already stamping the raised pad roof for some C30s anyway, so it was available on request to all light duty cousins) - and that because there were no 1 ton burbs - was the primary reason burbs never got them - i.e. no legal requirement for any of them, and no shared/common roof sheetmetal with anything else that was already getting stamped.

Anyway, just curious, had never heard this explanation before so wanted to ask.

Re: Could you order cab lights on any truck cab?

They say the reason there are raised pods for the lights is to make clearance for the pigtail (wiring). That's why many will tell you the lights can't be installed on the standard roof. If you go to mount the lights you will find the pigtails need to be bent over to fit

Re: Could you order cab lights on any truck cab?

I believe Cab lights and rear 3 center mounted red lights are a DOT requirement for vehicle width over.... 96” ???? Or something like that, 73 And up duallys all have the 3 Center mounted lights on the tailgate, all semi trailers and cargo/ car trailers also have the 3 center lights....it’s a width thing, hence c30 duallys and motorhomes in our years have cab lights.

Re: Could you order cab lights on any truck cab?

Over 8' wide needs width marked. That's why dooleys have the marker lights in the fender extensions fore and aft. The DRW option was 10,000# GVW which is where the cab lights and minimum three center markers become required. A SRW C/30 didn't get cab lights unless ordered.

This is great info I learned something new. I never noticed my c30 doesn’t have the marker lights on the spid.
