1967 Chevy 292 . . .
 

Happy New Year...

So, I am getting ready to put my 292 crate motor together. I have scoured the internet, for a step by step assembly. No such luck.
Do I put the oil pan on, first and then the timing cover (one Piece)??? Do, I put them at same time??? I also noticed that there were not any studs on the old engine for the oil pan. Do I need them???
I can do the work. I just do not want to mess anything up, in the process...or forget something, vital.

You all have been great in the past with my crazy questions.

Any suggestions???

I just put my 292 together last summer. You say crate motor, did it come with the oil pan on? It just bolts on, no studs. I do believe I installed the timing chain cover first though. I have a son in-law who lives in Spokane who is a mechanic, but if you pick up an old Chiltons manual it will help you a lot.

Good luck on your 292 build. I've built two in my lifetime -- since they tend to last 25 years [if you don't over-rev them and change oil at 2500 mile intervals] -- I'm a little rusty on some assembly proceedures.
I think the timing cover has to be in place before you bolt the oil pan on. [All cap screws, w/ a larger size at the corners]. You could R&R the timing gear cover for access if necessary w/o pulling the oil pan, but you'd have to be careful of the seal.
Just for my own curiosity, I'd like to know if you'd mind posting your engine block numbers, the ones stamped on a machined pad just aft of the distributor.

Post us a pic of the "crate" engine so I can see what is already on the engine....and I will list out a step by step for you....

Did this truck have a 292 in it before?
