Tilt steering questions

Ok, so I bought a tilt steering column for my 71 1 ton GMC. It came and the wires are not tucked into column. I began taking it apart to clean and see about reroute wires. Not at all sure how to reroute the wires. Do I remove wires from connector clip, then route them? I am also having trouble getting off the top section that houses turn signals and tilt lever. I assume there is a tool, but not sure what it is called.

Re: Tilt steering questions

Ok first off great score and I love four eyes[GMC] and one tons. I'm working on freshening one right now. On the wires there is a little metal channel that clips on to the bottom of the column that hides those wires. There is a tool to pull off the top shroud of the column but it is gonna be hard to find. If you take a little flat screwdriver[ like the kind people used to give away for promos] and run it around the joint where the top shroud and the main body are run that around there about ten times then just grab a hold of it and tug upwards. You could put something on the shaft and pry upwards on the shroud but save that as a last resort. That shroud while being metal is super thin and very flimsy it will bend pretty easily.if you keep "scoring" that screwdriver round and round and keep pulling it will start sliding and pop loose pretty quickly. One other thing that could help is to spray your favorite penetrating oil[such as WD-40, PB blaster] or whatever you use and spray around the inside edge of the shroud so it can run down and even the outside seem where you "score" it. I think you will find this will work for you instead of needing the Kent Moore tool listed in the book on these trucks. Jim

Thanks for the response. That cover channel is a rare bird. Looked online and have not even seen a picture including it. I may have to fashion something up.

Here is my thread on mine I did from a auto to 4 speed tilt it has the channel.
I'm not 100% sure but the standard cover should work on the tilt you may have to cut it down though.

Ok, I have seen the pictures. Looks good. But I have not been able to find that part. I have search as wire cover, wire router, wire channel. I am getting nothing. I can fabricate something, but would prefer to find actual part. All pictures I find show wires ran through column and coming out behind dash. All the columns I see online that are aftermarket are routed in column. Is there a search term I am just totally missing?

My pictures are of a 71-72 truck tilt. I would think a visit to the local yard would be your best option. I'm not at the house but I'm pretty sure that a stock column will have the same cover.:chevy:

Re: Tilt steering questions

Thanks so much for the offer. I am still going to try find it local. I am not sure how this part is not in any catalog. I can't even find it by Google. I found one aftermarket column with a similar track. I called a place that just sells steering columns, they knew exactly what I was asking about. They do not sell it. Told me to look in junk yard. I need to know if any local yards have compatible truck or trucks. So I will see what I can find this weekend.
