67 tilt column
4 Attachment(s)
Ok been working on the ramp truck this week swapping in the tilt column I rebuilt and shaved. I have a question for those who know more than me as in KevsClassic are any of the other tilt column guys like Retro68, LockDoc, are anyone with info on the correct # for the tilt.
The white one is what came out of the standard column in the ramp I took out. The black ones are some I have had forever. I think I bought them when I did the swap in my 71 but that was 20+ years ago now. I have 2 of these black cam's for some reason and the inside diameter is bigger than the white one so I will assume they are for a tilt but not sure they are for a truck are what year if it makes any difference???? The numbers on the black ones are 399297. The white one is 3902187:chevy: |
Re: 67 tilt column
The cam for a tilt column is relieved on the back side for the spring that puts pressure on the cam towards the steering wheel.

Re: 67 tilt column
Usually tilt column cancel cams are black or green, post pics of the back side of the cam. Non tilt cam also has a bevel which rides in the upper column bearing.

Here are the back side pictures. I figure the black one is for a tilt but non of the ones I find on the net have this number in them. I was just curious what it may fit. Yes the white one is beveled and it came out of the standard 3 speed steering column of the ramp truck. It all was there and worked like it was suppose to.:chevy: |
Re: 67 tilt column
As far as '67 tilt columns go, there isw no such animal. They came out later.

Re: 67 tilt column
I figured you'd know. I wondered about the title because I was thinking your ramp truck was a '68 (but same is true there). Looks like you got your answer when I was posting, so thought I'd mention that tidbit for anyone not aware. Like Jack Webb would say on Dragnet, "Just the facts, Ma'am"

The ramp truck is actually titled as a 67 but the guy I bought it from put the 68 fenders on it. He liked the side markers. He said they looked right with all the other lights.:chevy: |

Well I went over to my buddies shop where the ramp is and sure enough it's a tilt cam.
Now my next question??? What does the spring do? I bought this one a while back and it's suppose to be for our trucks but there is no way the steering hub is going on with it used. The hub fits fine without it. So is it for just factory wheels you think? The picture with the wheel is without the spring I can't push it hard enough to compress the spring to get the nut on. Now to find the right spring parts and get the custom horn cap done.:chevy: |
Re: 67 tilt column
that spring is for a non tilt. the correct spring will fit into the underside of the cancelling cam.
|
Re: 67 tilt column
The spring goes under the cancelling cam and it looks like the spring that you have pictured is the one that goes at the bottom of the column next to the washer between the column and intermediate shaft on a non tilt column, the one that goes under the cancelling cam is not as heavy duty as the one you have.

The spring isn't the lower one it's taller. The standard spring want fit over the tilt shaft. This picture shows no spring for this type of steering wheel. This is what I have in my 71 and the ramp truck.:chevy: |
Re: 67 tilt column
maybe the corvette tilt was made different. all truck , van , and motorhome tilts had a spring under the cancelling cam. I might be able to get a pic of the right one tomorrow

I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking I had a spring in my 71 when I had this wheel in it years ago but maybe not. I do have a spring in it now but have a 67 Chevelle wheel in it. This was the e bay add pictures I bought it off of. This is showing it under the turn signal cam and the collar??? It looks as though I did buy the wrong one. It's a upper bearing spring but for later models.:chevy: |

I just ordered this one it should be correct.
His add said: This auction is for one New Upper Bearing Spring for a tilt column in a 67-72 Chevy Pickup, 67-68 Camaro, Chevelle, Impala, GTO, 442, Cutlass, Lemans,73-81 GM (Chevy & GMC) Vans w/ tilt, and Motor homes based on GM chassis. Not for any GM column manufactured before 1967 or without a 4 way flasher system in the turn signal switch. This new spring goes over the upper shaft between the Upper Bearing Nut and the Cancel Cam as seen in the second picture. These springs have been gone from GM for many years and very hard to find. This spring is new, never installed, with NO original packaging. This spring has sold on eBay in the past for as much as $35.00 so now is your chance to get the correct one. I also have the new upper bearing kit if you need it. Check out my other items! |
