I bought a repop one and scuffed it with a maroon scotch brite pad and painted it with SEMS Trim Black in an aerosol.

I tend to like the rustoleum gallon can products under the hood. It is not top show quality, but it's easy to work with, affordable, duarable, and touches up nicely. I like the flat black and will usually brush it on in two coats (maybe spray the first coat to save time) and finalize the build with a final coat to cover all the boo-boos from assembly. It's quality stuff, just not shiny.

I like them to look OEM, power wash and satin clear looks close enough to me

yeah I clean the heck out of them and add about 3 coats of satin clear

2x, scuff with scotchbright and I use regular clear for a bit of extra shine.

I used my cabinet sandblaster(Happy Birthday to me!) on mine and a few coats of rattle can lacquer.

I had to do some fiberglass repair on my heater box and I was going to try to dye the glass in the repair to match the original dark grey glass of the heater box. I quickly just concentrated on the glass repair and conceded that I would have to paint the box after the repair. The heater box on my 71 step is a dark grey fiberglass and it looks to be old and original. I tried black satin spray bomb but ended up sanding it all off as I liked the look of the dark grey box. I eventually used Duplicolor Dark Charcoal Bumper and Trim paint also in spray bomb. It matches the color of the grey heater box very closely. My truck is far from concours original and I’m not sure if the heater boxes were painted black when they left the factory but I like the dark charcoal color with the contrasting satin black blower motor.

Here are some photos of the outside (painted) part of the heater box and also a shot of the inside (natural dark grey fiberglass) . It’s not a perfect color match but it’s close enough for me. As far the finish, it’s not quite satin but not a flat look either. The lighting was creating a lot of glare so getting good photos was challenging.My heater box was busted up pretty good and also painted black by the previous owner (screwball). I could have lived with the black but not the 40+ years of dirt that was under the black.
