Which has more value, Chevy or GMC trucks?

Let's assume same year, same options, same condition. Everything being equal, which one is worth more/more desirable? It seems the GMC's are more rare (to me anyways) because I don't see that many of them. Does it just come down to personal preference, or does the actual value lean one way or the other?

Any thoughts or opinions on this??

Chevy is generally more desirable but in reality it’s pretty much a wash with a slight edge to Chevy though many claim gmc is made better

Glad you said "made better." My Dad went down in 1969 and bought a new GMC with overload springs as his daily driver. It has been my daily driver for many years now. He said it was widely believed that the GMC had a beefier frame than the same 1500 Chevy , which caused the GMC purchase. In my limited access to both trucks I cannot tell any difference .

Just wondering where those perceived beliefs came from back in the day....

The old car price "guide" gives more value to the Chevy models. I like the rear coils on the Chevy myself.

While I cannot confirm it, I have heard that the CMC is, even today, like a "high end" or more well optioned than the Chevy.

Anyone else hear this?

These trucks all had the exact same options available with the same lack of limitations whether they were Chevy or GMC. The values are the same. There is no book.

It's really going to depend on the buyer. Some will be willing to pay more for a Chevy and some for a GMC. You'll find more guys looking for the Chevy than the GMC, though.

It's always a matter of preference and opinion but they are basically the same truck....But....is the key word here.
IMHO the Chevrolet 72 Super is still the best looking truck GM ever produced.

I don't see much difference in asking prices either. My 2 cents,; in the 60-72 ,Chevy looked better to me. Although a swb 4x4 GMC IN 70-72 is a beautiful combo . I feel like Chevy dropped the ball with the slant eye run in the early 2000s. But they,(both), are still in business, so what do I know?

GMC put lock washers on all of the bolts. Chevy only put them on some of them. Thats why GMCs are better.

Re: Which has more value, Chevy or GMC trucks?

The reason GMC is considered a better truck was due to options. When you purchased a GMC, the starting level included more options thus starting prices were and still higher. Chevrolet is priced and optioned for the lower end consumer making them more affordable. So from my opinion they are both the same in quality, it's just one has higher end options making it the more prestige's brand. It's all about those hips (options):)

GMC's also had the colored dash gauge bezels as Chevy did not. GMC has always been marketed as an upscale Chevy. I prefer the Chevy grills over the GMC. PRice wise-anyone's guess, but I have heard the GMC referred to as the GentleMen's Chevy :)

That's like asking which is prettier, a blonde or a brunette?

On a somewhat related note, there's an old saying that blondes have more fun. But do you know why?

They are easier to find in the dark..... ;)

Re: Which has more value, Chevy or GMC trucks?

I'd rather have a Chevy so it is more valuable to me. My father prefers GMC so....

Regardless any 67 to 72 is pretty than how ugly the new Chevy's are. They just keep making them uglier and uglier.

Personal preference.

My dad worked at a dealership around 1970. He told me (on many occasions) about a brand new chevy truck that just came in off the delivery truck, with a GMC horn button. Either the factory ran out and slapped the GMC one on, someone at GM did it to be funny, or someone swapped it between the factory and the end delivery point will always be a mystery.

Were GMC and Chevy trucks not produced in the same plants?

Re: Which has more value, Chevy or GMC trucks?

I've preferred the Chevy's for many years mostly because of the eggcrate grill look.
However, if it wasn't for that design I would be going with the GMC's.
In my opinion they are more rare...and you have to like that dual headlight (metal vs. plastic) chrome grill...when it is new and bright.

A '72 Sierra Grande is not always an easy truck to find relative to the Cheyenne Super's...their equivalent.

Regardless, value wise?......it is completely buyer dependent in my opinion.

All good

I had to laugh at this one! I’m not sure about GMC coming more equipped pound for pound than Chevy. The only significant differences I’m aware of short of appearance (front end, tailgate etc.) is that GMC came standard with rear leaves instead of Chevys standard coils on the 2 wheel drive trucks. Might be some other things but I’ve always thought the trucks were similarly equipped package wise(Cheyenne vs Sierra, etc.) and obviously you could have most any options back then if the boxes were checked when it was ordered.

I feel the Chevys are more popular over all. More popularity equals more value.

Probably, maybe? Heck I dunno haha!

CG is right........Chevs are better and grills suck on the Jimmies:)

Re: Which has more value, Chevy or GMC trucks?

I worked at a GMC/Pontiac dealer in the late 70s one of my jobs was to check in new vehicles, almost every truck load of GMCs coming off the transport truck had at leased one Chevrolet horn button, fender emblem or hubcaps. They are all built in same factory, and all Have same options and had same MSRP. Although some options were different like standard rear leaf springs, and you could get the V-6 in earlier years.

Re: Which has more value, Chevy or GMC trucks?

Main reason GMC's stayed around was so BOP dealers could sell trucks too. Same rigs, same options as Chevy's. Except for very early model GMC's (WW2 era through the early 1950's) were built like stand alone tanks. :)

Re: Which has more value, Chevy or GMC trucks?

Pertaining to the leaf/coil springs between the two brands, Chevy offered the trailing arm suspension with coil springs as 'standard', but could be optioned with leaf springs. GMC offered leaf springs as 'standard', but could be optioned with coils, up to either 3/4 ton or 1 ton, I'm not sure. This is a personal preference issue, but I can say that when I set out to find a slant nose GMC, it was far more difficult to find than the Chevrolet variant. Not to say one is better, or more valuable, but I would have(and ultimately did) happily pay more for the GMC. I had to travel pretty far, and pay a premium, but found what I wanted.
