5.3/4l60e in 61 Apache
5 Attachment(s)
I just set a 5.3 and 4l60e in the wife’s 61 Apache frame and the tranny pan is hitting what looks to be the original factory 3 speed tranny crossmember? Ive moved engine ahead and back and this crossmember either has to be notched out or totally cut out to clearance the tranny pan. Wandering what other guys have done on these older 1960-62 X frames? When I tore truck apart there was a homemade tranny crossmember installed for the 3 speed manual tranny behind what looks to be the factory one. I’m using 68-72 frame stands and ict adjustable engine mounts .

I would think you could just remove it. At least that's what you do on a 67-72 anytime you put an automatic transmission in one. I would bet a factory automatic truck wouldn't have it. Is it welded or riveted in?

It’s welded in . I was looking on the 60-66 forum and looks like guys cut it out when going to an automatic with a sbc or bbc

Re: 5.3/4l60e in 61 Apache
The bellhousing crossmember needs to be removed. On the '60-'62 frames that requires cutting it apart from the frame rails and then grinding/sanding smooth. That 'home made' trans crossmember is upside down.
