Removing Windshield - 53 Chevy Truck
I am changing the color of my truck (still yellow, just a different yellow). I want to remove the windshield. Any tips and tricks on removing the windshield without breaking it?
Thanks. Wade |

Razor blade. I was able to easily cut through the top part of the seal where it goes over the lip, cut at a 90 degree angle from the glass. Peeled right off and light taps from inside to push out. My wife helped make sure it didn't fly out.

If it's hard and old just cutting it out is the way to go. Nice sharp razor blade and get ur done. If the rubber is soft and in good shape you can still remove it properly. I have an original one with a windshield for my 59 Rambler that is totally usable so even the original one may be usable. If you plan on doing that you can buy tools like these or make them as I did. Here is a lowdown on that. Link to article........https://www.hotrodders.com/forum/win...ls-360386.html https://i200.photobucket.com/albums/...psvxixpuqe.jpg Brian |

The key is as they said, what is the actual condition of the rubber? If it isn't pliable ti the point you can easily move it around on the inside just be done with it and cut it.
I had the glass out and in my 48 several times over the years but had replaced the rubber when I chopped it. You first have to remove the inside moulding and trim around the windshield then go in and with tools close to what Brian showed peel the rubber back from the metal with one tool and roll the edge under the metal with the other until you get the top and sides mostly rolled out. You still stand a huge chance of cracking the windshields then though. It's just backwards of installing it. |

This video is a bit long at 17 and some minutes but anyone installing a windshield in an AD should watch it for some pointers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAgklyxkW2Y They showed cutting the rubber on the old one but if you want to save the rubber you need to do the reverse (without the rope) of how they got the inner lip that goes over the pinch weld in. You have to roll it back out rather than in.
From past experience I'd use something to lube the rubber as you might end up tearing the rubber if you don't. Watch the part where they pull the rope out at just past the 10 minute mark and you can figure out how you are going to have to roll that same rubber lip back on the other side of the pinch weld to get the rubber and glass back out. Lift, tuck, lift, tuck until you get most of it lifted and tucked on the other side so you can remove it. |
