Location of rear end on springs.

Somehow it seems like my rear end is back some. What is the distance from center of rear end to the center of the front leaf bolt?

At first I thought I put the springs on backwards and about vomited. But there is no way it could do the other way, the rear spring eye wouldn't' even fit in the front after looking at it a bit.

But the rear seems back to far, anyone have that measurement?

Is it an open driveshaft? I know I moved my axle forward and inch or 2 to center it up.

Yeah, it's a 55 Passenger car rear housing.

Did you use spring perches that had a 2nd hole forward of the center hole? and tie plates that also had a 2nd centering hole?

Re: Location of rear end on springs.

The bracket on the rear end has three holes, I put it in the center. The springs are Posie with the center bolts back so rear end mounts in the proper place. They aren't stock springs with the bolt too far forward.

My apologies Martinsr, I misread. I thought it was too far forward. I spaced the center of my axle 1.5 inches back from the spring perch bolt to center it up in the wheel well. How far is the leaf spring center bolt from the center of axle?

gotcha! I'll measure when i get home if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

Yeah, I'm not going to be making a drive shaft or anything so it's not a big deal I can correct it later when I get the bed on if it needs it but damn it's driving me nuts now. LOL The front of the spring is longer than the back and that just isn't normal.

mine measures 27-1/2 inches center of axle to center of fwd spring pivot zerk.

I also have Posies springs.

27-1/2 center to center or easier to measure from center of spring eye to o.d. of housing tube - see attachment. I have an 8.5 10-bolt axle with Posies springs.

you can swap the springs end to end, this changes location of the locator bolt which you may have to do. Measure from each eye to the locator and you'll see this.

Right on, thanks. The thing is the springs can't be swapped end to end, it's got reversed eyes at the rear and it would't fit into the mount on the frame at the front.

just had another look, you're right, my Posies have reversed eyes at rear - my originals do not.

Yep, I started looking at all this when I got the front springs out and put them there to install over the weekend. I sat them there and went, "Ok, how the hell do these go on" looking at the different ends. Then look at the rear and started to panic. I took pictures and went in the house to study it then back out to notice there is no way the fronts could be swapped front to back, it wouldn't even fit. That's when I saw the rear is the same, you couldn't rotate it around, it wouldn't fit.

But damn the rear end looks back some. I measured it and think it was around 27 so I will try to night and see. Thanks again, I may sleep better tonight. :D

naah, you'll find another reason not to sleep. did you get enough primer on those doors, did you prop them up well enough so they don't slip and skid to the floor overnight, was that a spot of fish eye in there, will the doors fit properly with all this moving around, what color will I paint it....am I sure....? whats that noise? oh, it's the alarm clock. must be morning.

That number and Popstand's diagram need to be achieved as that is one of the most often asked questions we get.

Stock 55/57 car/truck pads cut off and placed back on will raise the rear a bit from stock though. That was cool back in the 70's when we ran tires that were too big and rear ends that were too wide but doesn't fly now.

I'm thinking this was from 1979 or 80 as it still had the side pipes.

Re: Location of rear end on springs.

I’m 80 years old and built my ‘53 mostly almost 30 years ago. Could have but didn’t chop the top, black sidewall BFG TA tires tires same size front and rear, and the tires aren’t out past the fenders. Was going for the original/stock look - except under the hood. Have gray tinted glass - not sure I’d do that today.

My tastes today are: I no longer like ‘big and littles’, I like them down and level - but not the bagged jobs with running boards on the ground. Don’t like chopped tops, haven’t liked louvers since the 60’s, never ever could stand white letter tires. I originally made some sketches of ’53 with ghost flamed front end and of scalloped front end, but didn’t do it. Back in the 50’s I did scallop jobs on several cars. Long time ago. . . still fun.
