Clutch kits
 

Alright... I have the trans dropped in my truck currently to replace the ring gear. It's a 69 C60 with an dana 5756-B 5 speed with a 427. There was 2 hot spots on the flywheel and the clutch has seen better days so I went ahead and had the flywheel resurfaced, they took .005" off and I have a .005" shim for it. I also ordered this clutch from rock auto (the organic one) https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...lutch+kit,1993 now I'm sure some of you are laughing at my inexperience. Obviously it's not the correct one. Where is a go to place for clutches for these trucks? The only ones I've found is $900 and that seems a bit much this one https://fortwayneclutch.com/product/...sku-mu1266_kt/ What options do I have with the current one? I've used the search function and came across one thread that was a dead end.

why do you think its not right ?

my 88 gmc-7000 ( c-60) has a 13" clutch and looks like the one i took out but better and i got it from rock auto .

That should be the right kit for your truck. Not very often you'll see a diaphragm type clutch in a medium/heavy truck but they were optional.

You could take your old clutch to the local NAPA and have it re-lined. Get your pressure plate surfaced and you would be good to go.

That's my luck I guess. It's definitely not the right kit I got from rockauto. Both laid flat there is 1-1/4" difference in height between the two of them. The new one is 13" while the old one is 12". I thought maybe someone possibly put a small block clutch on it to save $20 because I know how cheap people can be.

If I get my pressure plate surfaced and the plate re-lined will I need to shim anything else? Looking at the pressure plate they shouldn't have to take much off of it. It's in pretty good shape to the naked eye, looks like it just needs to be hit quickly to true it but everything I'm seeing says having the pressure plate surfaced isn't a good idea?

I also have 2 out of 4 springs on my clutch that looks like they've been subjected to too much heat.

I just came across this. The only thing I see that is different is that it is a 13" and not a 12" like the clutch I pulled out of it. It seems to work with the 366 but no specific mention of working on the 427

Did your old clutch engage smoothly? If so no need to surface the pressure plate. Post pictures of the springs.

It did actually. It was very smooth so I was surprised that it needed one. Plus the hot spots on the flywheel told me I'm better off doing it all while I was there. I have one picture on my phone of the old 12" and what was suppose to be the new 13" next to each other. I haven't had time to find a hosting site so I can upload more pictures yet.

I had one conversation on the phone so far with Phoenix friction about the clutch. I sent an email to them with pictures and am awaiting a response. Their catalog only goes back to 72 or 73 with the 427 so he's going to do some digging.

I got a return call. The kit I need is no longer available... just my luck. Looking at the pictures the pressure plate doesn't look at that great. 2 of the 6 springs have obviously been over heated at some point in it's life.

Looking at the pictures, I don't see anything that would concern me. The clutch appears to have lots of life left. The color of the springs is leftover from manufacturing them, not from operation. They do not appear to be distorted, I would reinstall and roll on.

the first link you posted is a multi finger newer style pressure plate . actualy pedal feel is smoother and less effort if you ask me .

second link is the older 3 or 4 finger pressure plate style and harder / firmer pedal effort fell .

the 3 or 4 finger design is a taller pressure plate when set side by side to the multi finger style .

years ago i swapped a k30 truck from mech clutch to hydro clutch and did not know the clutch fork was different . the k30 had a older 3/4 finger design and the taller hat of the pressure plate hit the fork arm and rubbed them and made the engine sound like the starter was stick engaged . had to pull the WHOLE 4speed and t-case a 2nd time to swap the clutch to the correct newer style and also the newer fork arm .

Thanks for all of your help guys. I found someone in Detroit who still rebuilds these things. I talk to him a little bit ago and he will rebuild it for me for around $200. For that price I'm going to go ahead and have him rebuild it.

I know there is some life left in the current clutch but I don't want to have a reason to ever pull the trans again if I don't absolutely need to. When I can I like to do it once and do it right. If the truck does what I want it to do the way I want it to do it like I have drempt up in my head it should be very capable of being a daily driver or "spare car".

That's your best option. I think GM did away with that 12" 2 plate clutch assy something like 30 years ago. I remember rebuilding those 20 yrs ago, because nobody offered them anymore
