Brake light switch

So, I have no brake lights. I've followed the wires and the wiring has been so messed with that it veers off where it shouldn't and I've decided on buying a wiring kit for the whole truck. Already picked one out from painless wiring but in the meantime, what can I do as far as just wiring something up to get them to work.

The switch is located next to the steering column adjacent to the brake pedal arm. Your looking for a white wire and an orange wire to the switch, orange wire should be hot even if the key is off. White wire is energized when the pedal is depressed releasing the switch to close the brake light circuit. The brake light switch is a long threaded (adjustable) switch that must be adjusted correctly so that the brake pedal arm depresses the switch in the rested position. When the pedal is depressed the switch should energize the white wire. (If memory serves correct) Before you tackle a complete harness replacement, get yourself a color wiring diagram and a service manual... The switch is #28 here, http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=183 "Repair Manuals" are here, http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=200 wiring diagrams are located below the manuals. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=200 Make sure you order the correct year manual, you didn't indicate the year or model of your truck?

Do your tail lights work? If neither the brake lights nor the tail lights work, it's often a bad ground.

Touch orange and white together if they light up the problem is in the switch.

I made a short jumper wire with male spade clips to do this. It's one of the things that a mechanic can always use. Just pop the plug off the light , connect the jumper and go look behind the vehicle.
